My Revered Guru : Dr. Jain
35
kind heart, he advised me not to sell out my plot of land in this way. He atonce sanctioned a research scholarship for six months, but not for one year and promised to pay my examination fee of Rs. 200/which he actually gave at the time of submitting my Ph.D. thesis to the Bihar University. From this incident one can easily judge how he followed a strict principle on the one hand and on the other he had the softest heart for his pupils to help them in their needs so that financial difficulties must not come in their way of work.
On another occasion he told me in regard to some Hostel affairs of which I was the prefect, that one student was taking his meal in the hotel because of unwelcome atmosphere in the Hostel. It was no other than good hearted V.P. Jain with his sentimental mind who went to the hotel, because I had to take him to task as his elder brother for his emotional behaviour for many things, i.e. to exhaust the mess-store by entertaining so many guests and to starve on the next morning. Any way Dr. Jain told me that this matter was hanging heavy on his heart. I told him the fact how his emotional behaviour forced me to be strict. At one point Dr. Jain told me, 'all of you have not come for studies, but for fighting.' This was the anti-climax of our relationship in another direction. When I promised him to bring back Sri V.P. Jain and peace to the Hostel, his face beamed with smile and happiness. I did my job immediately on my return to the Hostel to his satisfaction. Here one can observe his strict principle for our studies in a peaceful atmosphere.
On the report of the Superintendent (Civil Surgeon) of Victoria Hospital of Muzaffarpur regarding a strong letter of my friend Sri K.R. Candra, charging the eye-specialist with corruption of extracting money for treating eyes of the patients, Dr. Jain called my friend for explanation and apology for his unseemly behaviour. He wrote to the Civil Surgeon about his appropriate action, but he added in his letter that the fact remained that the eye-specialist demanded money from my student. Here was Dr. Jain with strict principle in regard to the social behaviour of his students and moral conduct of others also.
