them closer in their mutual life and work. If it were not, the latter would have left the former in the very beginning. I remember the day on which he thrice congratulated me on the success in my first drafting of the chapter 'Political conditions as reflected in the Bhagavati Sutra', with these words, 'It is very difficult for a student to satisfy me with the standard of his writing, but you have satisfied me in your first attempt. Keep it up. 'It was this encouragement of his which gave me much confidence in my capacity to work out my thesis.
According to a fixed routine. I had to attend my regular research classes with him thrice a week to show my progress work to him at proper time in course of three years. If there was any mistake in my writings, he at once corrected it and suggested new things to add to my writings. He followed the same method of teaching in the case of other Research Scholars Sri K.R. Candra, D.B. Pathan and others so that all his pupils could make progress equally in their respective work without difficulty. He used to say that the students have the right to make mistakes, but the teachers have the right to correct them. How may teachers in India will follow his maxim? I find most of them condemning the students as mediocre etc. with their so-called empty intellectual snobbery. Here was my Guru Dr. Hiralal Jain above all with his intellectual majesty and fatherly affection for his dear students. But he followed a very strict principle in regard to their study, sanction of scholarship, moral conduct, social behaviour etc.
Here I am citing a few cases. On the termination of my two years scholarship I requested him for the renewal of my research scholarship for another year, as it was not possible for me to complete my thesis within two years. He refused to do so on this principle that it would be a bad precedence if it was done so. He proposed to offer me financial assistance at the rate of Rs. 100/- per month from his own pocket so that I could finish my work within another year without difficulty.
