________________ My Revered Guru: Dr. Jain On my first meeting with him at Muzaffarpur on the 7th March 1957, I was so much impressed by his cordial reception, his solution of my problems with affection and his offer of a research scholarship to me to carry on my research studies under his guidance there that I felt within myself the presence of divine grace through such a Guru for the turn of my life. I welcomed his offer to be a regular research scholar at his Institute, but my mind was still wavering with the thought whether I should join his Institute or not in such a dirty and unhealthy atmosphere of Muzaffarpur. The sight of the new Institute with a very small liabrary, housed in a small rented building in an unsuitable locality, depressed my mind more and more to take the final decision. 33 When I was walking side by side with Dr. Jain by the Railway Station, he suddenly drew me to his side by pulling my left arm with a fatherly touch to save me from the dashing accident of a running rickshaw driven by a reckless driver. This affectionate magnetic touch of future Guru made my wavering mind settle down and inspired me to come to him as his pupil on the 15th March 1957, by severing all connections with Vishwa Bharti. Jain Education International On the very day of my joining the Vaishali Research Institute, Dr. Jain told me straightway 'Now you are a member of our small family. I would like to see your day-to-day progress in the field of research. I am here to help you in every respect. Of course, your task is heavy, no scholar upto this time dared to touch this Bhagavati Sutra to work out a Ph. D. thesis on it.' Since then I started my research work under his guidance, sitting at his feet and completed my thesis 'Studies in the Bhagavati Sutra' within three years. Truly speaking, I did not know Prakrit well and A B C D of Jainism when I began my work under his guidance. But his inspiring teaching raised me up day by day to learn Prakrit and Jainology with devotion to my work with his blessings. Now I do realise how great was my Guru to teach his own religion and philosophy to a pupil of another religion, having a different tradition and to convert him to his ideals gradually. It was the spiritual relation between the Guru and the Sishya which brought For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
