## Chapter 161: Explanation of the Horse-Ear-Like Action
**Verse 787 (108):** In the six actions, the lowering and raising (of karma) should be understood as being like a cat. The lowering is the rule, and the raising is the cat-like action. ||16||
**Commentary 470:** The meaning of this verse should be explained. ||470||
**Special Meaning:** This verse has been revealed to explain the division of the two actions of raising and lowering. The meaning is that before the time of the ripening of karma, both actions occur. But at the time of ripening and beyond, only the lowering action occurs, not the raising action. This arrangement or rule should be understood in relation to the क्षपक (Kshapaka) category. Because there is a special feature in the उपशम (Upshama) category, and that is that from the first moment of the subtle saṃpārāyika (Saṃpārāyika) who is descending, until the first moment of the cessation of karma, there is only lowering of the mohanīya karma (karma that binds to the mind). Again, from the first moment of the cessation of karma onwards, both lowering and raising occur. In this way, the meaning of this commentary verse is simple, and the commentator has not explained it with the help of the Churnisūtras, but has only given this information, that the teacher should explain the special meaning related to this verse for the benefit of the slow-witted students.
**Commentary 471-472:** In this way, after explaining the seven root verses related to the transition and replacement, the form of the horse-ear-like action should be explained. Horse-ear-like action, or oscillating action, or lowering-raising action, these are the three names of the horse-ear-like action. ||471-472||
**Special Meaning:** Horse-ear-like action, oscillating action, and lowering-raising action, these three are synonymous. Horse, meaning like the ear of a horse, which gradually decreases in size, those results are called horse-ear-like action. The name आदोल (Ādol) is of the swing. Just as the distance between the pillar and the rope of a swing appears triangular, like the ear of a horse, in the same way, here too, the accumulation of the parts of the burning fire of anger, etc., appears to decrease gradually, therefore it is also called oscillating action. Because the parts of the karmas like anger, etc., appear to decrease and increase, it is also called lowering-raising action.
**Commentary 473:** When the six actions have been transcended, then in the subsequent time, the appropriate being becomes an अवेदी (Avedi) of the first moment. At that very time, the first moment horse-ear-like action-causing...
