## 12 Sanjama Sanjamaladdhi - Arthaadhikaaro
**Chapter 12: The Attainment of Restraint and Restraint-Liberation**
**Churni Sutra:** In the Anuyoagdwara, there is a single sutra-gatha called "Deshavirata" (restraint from the land). It is as follows:
**1-2:** "The attainment of restraint and restraint-liberation, as well as the attainment of charitra (conduct), the progressive increase in results, and the pacification of past karmas, are all worthy of description in this Anuyoagdwara."
**115:** "The attainment of restraint and restraint-liberation, as well as the attainment of charitra (conduct), the progressive increase in results, and the pacification of past karmas, are all worthy of description in this Anuyoagdwara."
**Special Meaning:** This gatha is actually bound to two adhikaaras (chapters): Sanjama Sanjamaladdhi and Sanjamaladdhi, as the gatha-sutra-kar (author of the sutras) himself has stated at the beginning of the text. However, the Churnikar (commentator) has stated in a general way that there is one gatha in this Anuyoagdwara, with the intention of discussing it in the independent adhikara of Sanjama Sanjamaladdhi. This is because it was not possible to discuss both Anuyoagdwara together.
**Explanation:** Restraint from a single land, which is the abandonment of sins like violence, is called Sanjama Sanjamaladdhi. The purification of results obtained through the absence of the destructive, non-rejectable, covering kshaya (passions) called "kapya" is called Sanjama Sanjamaladdhi. The complete abandonment of all sins like violence is called "sakal sanjam" (complete restraint). The purification obtained through the absence of the destructive, rejectable, covering kshaya (passions) called "kashaya" is called Sanjamaladdhi. Of these two, only Sanjama Sanjamaladdhi will be discussed in this Anuyoagdwara.
**Explanation of Terms:**
* **Alabdha:** The progressive increase in the purification of results, from the first moment of attaining Sanjama Sanjamaladdhi or Sanjamaladdhi until the end of the moment, in an infinite, multiplied sequence, is called "Vaddavaddhi" (progressive increase) or "Badhavaddhi" (increase).
* **Upshamana:** The absence of the obstructive, past karmas, which hinder the practice of deshacharitra (restraint from a land) or sakalcharitra (complete restraint), is called "Upshamana" (pacification). It has four types:
* **Prakriti Upshamana:** The pacification of the nature of the karmas that obstruct desha sanjam (restraint from a land) and sakal sanjam (complete restraint).
* **Sthiti Upshamana:** The absence of the arising of the states of these natures, or of all karmas, from the innermost core to the outermost layer.
* **Anubhag Upshamana:** The pacification of the results of the karmas.
* **Pradeshopahamana:** The pacification of the karmas in specific regions.
**Further Explanation:** The obstruction to charitra (conduct) is the arising of past karmas.
