## Chapter 73: Description of the Four Types of Kṣaya
**Verse 599 (19)** Like the root of a bamboo, like the horn of a ram, like cow urine, and like a writing brush, so are the four types of Maya. ||72||
**Verse 599 (20)** Like a worm, like a pearl, like dust, and like a turmeric cloth, so are the four types of Greed. ||73||
**Explanation:**
**Maya** is said to be of four types:
* **Like the root of a bamboo:** This refers to Maya that is extremely crooked and cannot be straightened by any means, just like the root of a bamboo cannot be straightened by soaking it in water, bending it, or any other method.
* **Like the horn of a ram:** This refers to Maya that is less crooked than the bamboo root, but still very crooked. It can be straightened with effort, just like the horns of a ram can be straightened by heat.
* **Like cow urine:** This refers to Maya that is less crooked than the horn of a ram. It is like the urine of a cow, which leaves a crooked trail as it flows.
* **Like a writing brush:** This refers to Maya that is the least crooked and can be easily straightened, just like a writing brush.
**Greed** is also said to be of four types:
* **Like a worm:** This refers to Greed that is very subtle and pervasive, like the thread that a worm produces from its excrement.
* **Like a pearl:** This refers to Greed that is more visible and attractive, like a pearl.
* **Like dust:** This refers to Greed that is less attractive and more easily dismissed, like dust.
* **Like a turmeric cloth:** This refers to Greed that is the most visible and easily recognized, like a turmeric cloth.
