## Chapter 58: Explanation of the Meaning of the Term "Transmission"
**423**
Transmission in many regions in the past and transmission in fewer regions in the present is called "lesser transmission". 261. Transmission in as many regions in the past as in the present is called "stable transmission". 262. Transmission in the present without any transmission in the past is called "unspeakable transmission". 263. This meaning is used to explain the transmission of the "arm-like" (भुजाकार) transmission. 264. The "arm-like" transmission of falsehood (मिच्छत्तस्स) is of three types: lesser, stable, and unspeakable. 265. Similarly, the transmission of the sixteen types of karma, knowledge of men (पुरिसवेद), fear, and disgust (जुगुप्सा) are of four types. 266. Similarly, the transmission of right conduct (सम्मत्त), mixed conduct (सम्ममिच्छत्त), knowledge of women (इत्थि-वेद), knowledge of eunuchs (बुंसय वेद), laughter (हस्स), love (रति), anger (अर), and sorrow (शोक) should be known. 267. Notably, there is no stable transmission of these. 258-267.
**Notes:**
1. This sutra means: "Transmission in fewer regions now is called lesser transmission. Why is the transmission in fewer regions now considered lesser? Because it is specifically compared to the transmission in many regions in the past." - Jayadharacharya.
2. "Transmission in the same number of regions in the past and present is called stable transmission." - Jayadharacharya.
3. "Transmission now without any transmission in the past is called unspeakable transmission. This is because it is not mentioned in the three states of transmission." - Jayadharacharya.
4. "For example, in the case of a person who is on the path of right conduct (सम्मत्त), the transmission of falsehood (मिच्छत्तस्स) is unspeakable in the first stage. Then, in the stage of knowledge (विदियादिसमएस), it becomes "arm-like" transmission, and then it becomes lesser transmission until the person attains perfect enlightenment (सम्माइदिउत्ति). After that, in the stage of perfect knowledge (सव्वत्थ वेदयसम्माइट्रिट्ठम्मि), it becomes lesser transmission until the destruction of the karmic veil (दसणमोहक्खवणाए) and the attainment of the state of non-action (अपुव्वकरण पविट्ठस्स). In the state of non-action, the "arm-like" transmission should be considered everywhere. In the case of a person who is on the path of mixed conduct (उवसमसम्मत), the transmission is unspeakable in the first stage, "arm-like" in the stage of knowledge, and so on until the final stage of non-action. Then, in the state of non-action, the lesser transmission should be considered everywhere." - Jayadharacharya.
5. "Where the flow of karma is small, it is "arm-like" transmission. Where the flow of karma is large, or where there is both a large and a small flow of karma, it is lesser transmission. Where both are equal, it is stable transmission. Where there is no transmission in the past, it is unspeakable transmission. All this should be understood in accordance with the previous explanation. Notably, the unspeakable transmission of the twelve types of karma, knowledge of men, fear, and disgust should be considered in all debates, especially in the case of those who are not fully enlightened (अणताणुवधीण) and in the case of those who are not yet on the path of liberation (अपुव्वस जोगे)." - Jayadharacharya.
