## Verse 28: Description of Nature and Receptivity States
**261. Sixteen, twelve, eight, twenty, and three, taking these as the beginning, and adding one to each, twenty, that is, twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven, and twenty-eight, these nature states are not receptive.**
**Commentary:** There are twenty-eight nature states in the case of the deluding karma. Their numerical representation is as follows: 28, 27, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Out of these, five states are not suitable for transition: 28, 24, 17, 16, and 15. The remaining twenty-three states are considered suitable for transition. Their numerical representation is as follows: 27, 26, 25, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. The commentator himself has explained further how the decrease or increase in any nature leads to the formation of a particular state.
**Sixteen, twelve, eight, twenty, and three, taking these as the beginning, and adding one to each, twenty, that is, twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven, and twenty-eight, these nature states are not receptive.**
**Commentary:** The fundamental nature in which the atoms of other natures transition is called the receptive nature. Similarly, the nature states of the deluding karma that transition into other nature states are called receptive states, and those nature states that do not transition are called non-receptive states. This verse describes these receptive and non-receptive states. There are eighteen receptive states. They are as follows: 22, 21, 19, 18, 17, 15, 14, 13, 11, 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. There are ten non-receptive states. They are as follows: 28, 27, 26, 25, 24, 23, 20, 16, 12, 8. Out of the twenty-eight natures of the deluding karma, the nature of right faith and right knowledge do not bind, therefore twenty-six natures remain. Even in those, at one time, the binding of one out of the three Vedas, and one out of the pairs of laughter-joy and aversion-sorrow is possible, therefore, at one time, the binding of the remaining twenty-two natures occurs in the case of a false believer. This twenty-two nature state is the first receptive state, because in all these binding natures, there is a transition of all the natures that are present in existence. It is necessary to point out here that the binding of twenty-three or more natures does not occur at one time, therefore, twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven, and twenty-eight nature states are not receptive. Therefore, their negation is mentioned in the verse. When the binding of falsehood is eliminated from the twenty-two nature receptive state, or when the receptive nature of falsehood is no longer present, then twenty-one natures...
