## Kasayapāhuḍa Sutta
Āryamancu and Nāgahastī were great knowers of the principles of karma and masters of the Āgama. Until now, these two Ācāryas have been introduced and mentioned based on the Śve. tradition, but now, with the light of the Dhvala-Jayadhvala commentaries of the famous doctrinal texts of the Di. tradition, much of the misunderstanding about these two Ācārya-puṅgavas has been cleared, and much information about their time has been obtained. Jayadhvalakāra Ācārya Vīrasena, in the beginning of his commentary, has remembered both Ācāryas in this way:
> "Guṇa-hara-vayaṇa-viṇigga-gāhāṇattho 'vahariyo savvo. Jeṇajjamkhuṇā so saṇāgahatthī varaṃ deū || 7 || Jo ajjamkhusīso antevāsī vi ṇāgahatthissa. So vittisuttakattā jaiva saho me varaṃ deū || 8 ||"
> Meaning: "May those Āryamancu and Nāgahastī, who have correctly understood all the meanings of the (Kasayapāhuḍa) gāthās emanating from the lotus mouth of Guṇadhāra Ācārya, grant us blessings. May those who are disciples of Āryamancu and residents of Nāgahastī, the creators of the Vṛtti Sutra, the great Yati, grant me blessings."
This mention reveals three things:
1. Āryamancu and Nāgahastī were contemporaries.
2. Both were great knowers of the Kasayapāhuḍa.
3. Yativr̥ṣabha was a disciple of both and had obtained knowledge of the Kasayapāhuḍa from them.
Although Ācārya Yativr̥ṣabha has not mentioned himself as a disciple of Āryamancu and Nāgahastī in his present Cūrṇi or any other text, nor has he mentioned any other Ācārya as his disciple, the way he has informed about two teachings by saying "Ettha ve uvaesā" in some specific doctrinal places, it is clear that he had definitely received special teachings from two great knowledgeable gurus of his time. And therefore, there is no room for doubt in the mention made by Jayadhvalakāra Vīrasena that he was a disciple of Āryamancu and a resident of Nāgahastī.
The introduction of Āryamancu is given in the Nandīsūtra's pattavali as follows:
> "Bhaṇagaṃ karagaṃ jhaṇagaṃ pabhāvagaṃ ṇāṇa-dasaṇaguṇāṇam. Vandāmi añjamangu suyāsāgarapāragaṃ dhīram || 28 ||"
> Meaning: "I bow to Āryamancu, the Ācārya who is the interpreter of the meaning of the Kālika and other sūtras, the one who makes the Sadhupad-ocit actions happen, the one who meditates on Dharma-dhyāna or is a special practitioner, the one who has a great influence on the qualities of knowledge and vision, the one who is patient and brave, meaning the one who endures trials and tribulations, and the one who has crossed the ocean of scriptures."
In the Śve. pattavali, he is mentioned as a disciple of Āryasamudra.
The introduction of Prāthānāgahastī is found in the same pattavali as follows:
> "Puraṇo tesi doṇha pi pādamūle asīdisadgāhāṇam guṇa-haramuh-kamala-viriṇaggayāṇam atya samm soūpa payivasah-bhaṭārāeṇa pavayavacchaleṇa cupiṇasutta kaya. Jayagho Bha. 1 pṛ. 88."
