heirless his property was confiscated to the State. The State-officers took possession of the house, a Panchakula was appointed and it was only after all the things were taken away by the State-officers, that the dead body could be removed. This gave much trouble to the people. Prostitution was not considered a great sin. Gambling was very common even among kings and the public. On religious occasions the people gambled freely. Five kinds of gambling are described. 1 अन्धय which is daily resorted to by kings on squares with a small piece of cloth on their privities. 2. नालय which is played by bankers with plenty of gold. 3. चतुरङ्ग which seems to be the same as chess. 4. अक्ष dice, with which the Kauravas won a kingdom. 5. वराड playing with cowries common with boys.2 The descriptionof gamblers too is given,Of some, handa, feet and ears are chopped off. Of others, eyes are removed. Some are without nose and lips, of some all the limbs are cut off, while others go naked. 3
Among the gamblers were to be counted the following royal personages 1 Son of the king of Mewar, 2 Brother of the king of Soratha,3the Lord of Chandravati, 4 Nephew of the king of Nadol, 5 Nephew of the king of Godhra, 6 Sister's son of the king of Dhara, 7 Maternal uncle of the king of Sakambhati, 8 Step-brother of the king of Konkan, 9 Brother-in-law of the

कुम्भखारीसहस्रे द्वे प्रत्येक स्नेहधान्ययोः । पञ्चायुतानि वाहानां सहस्रमपि हस्तिनाम् ॥ ४० ॥ अयुतानि गवामष्टौ पञ्च पञ्च शतानि तु । इलाहसद्मनां यानपात्राणामनसामपि ॥ ४१ ॥ पूर्वजोपार्जिता लक्ष्मीरियत्यस्तु गृहे मम ।
इतो निजभुजोपात्तां करिष्ये पात्रसात्पुनः ॥ ४२ ॥ (1) वेश्याव्यसनं तु वराकमुपेक्षणीयम् । न तेन किञ्चिद्गतेन स्थितेन वा । (2) एयं अंधियनाम रूवं पसयच्छि ! चच्चरे पिच्छ ।
जं सेविजइ निच्चं कयकोवीणेहिं निवईहिं ॥ ५ ॥ अवरं मयच्छि! पिच्छसु मह रूवं इत्थनालयं नाम । उवणीयकणयकोडीहिं सेवियं वणियपुत्तेहिं ॥ ६ ॥ तइयं नियसु नियंनिणि ! इणमो चउरंगयं ति मह रूवं । जस्थ अरिकन्नकडुया खडक्खडा अमयसारिच्छा ॥ ७ ॥ दच्छे ! इमं नियच्छसु चउत्थमक्खाभिहाणयं रूवं । कुरुतणया भूमिवई जस्स पसारण संजाया ॥ ८॥ पंचमयं मह रूवं वराडनाम इमं निहालेसु ।
सेवाइ जस्स डिम्भा गयंपि कालं न याणंति ॥ ९ ॥ (3) केवि कट्टियचरणकरकन्न, किवि कडियनयणजय, केवि नकअहरिहि विवजिय.! किवि लूणसव्वावथव केवि जेव खवणय अलजिय ।। IV-11
