[९. १९-२० प्रथम दीक्षा मे दोषापत्ति आने से उसका छेद करके फिर नये सिरे से जो दीक्षा का आरोपण किया जाता है, वह छेदोपस्थापनचारित्र है। इनमे पहला निरतिचार और दूसरा सातिचार छेदोपस्थापनचारित्र है ।
३. परिहारविशुद्धिचारित्र-जिसमे विशिष्ट प्रकार के तपःप्रधान आचार का पालन किया जाता है वह परिहारविशुद्धिचारित्र है ।'
४. सक्ष्मसंपरायचारित्र-जिसमे क्रोध आदि कषायों का तो उदय नही होता, केवल लोभ का अंश अतिसूक्ष्मरूप मे रहता है, वह सूक्ष्मसम्परायचारित्र है।
५. यथाख्यातचारित्र-जिसमें किसी भी कषाय का बिलकुल उदय नहीं रहता वह यथाख्यात अर्थात् वीतरागचारित्र है ।२
तप अनशनावमौदर्यवृत्तिपरिसंख्यानरसपरित्यागविविक्तशय्यासनकायक्लेशा बाह्य तपः । १९ । प्रायश्चित्तबिनयवैयावृत्त्यस्वाध्यायव्युत्सर्गध्यानान्युत्तरम् । २० ।
अनशन, अवमौदर्य, वृत्तिपरिसंख्यान, रसपरित्याग, विविक्त शय्यासन और कायक्लेश-ये बाह्य तप हैं।
प्रायश्चित्त, विनय, वैयावृत्त्य, स्वाध्याय, व्युत्सर्ग और ध्यान-ये आभ्यन्तर तप हैं।
वासनाओं को क्षीण करने तथा समुचित आध्यात्मिक शक्ति की साधना के लिए शरीर, इन्द्रिय और मन को जिन-जिन उपायों से तपाया जाता है वे सभी तप कहे जाते है । तप के बाह्य और आभ्यन्तर दो भेद हैं । बाह्य तप वह है जिसमें शारीरिक क्रिया की प्रधानता हो तथा जो बाह्य द्रव्यों की अपेक्षासहित होने से दूसरों को दिखाई दे । आभ्यन्तर तप वह है जिसमे मानसिक क्रिया की प्रधानता हो तथा जो मुख्यरूप से बाह्य द्रव्यों की अपेक्षा से रहित होने से दूसरों को दिखाई न भी दे। स्थूल तथा लोगो द्वारा ज्ञात होने पर भी बाह्य तप का आभ्यन्तर तप की पुष्टि मे उपयोगी होने से ही महत्त्व माना गया है। बाह्य और आभ्यन्तर तप के वर्गीकरण में समग्र स्थूल और सूक्ष्म धार्मिक नियमों का समावेश हो जाता है।

The various means by which the body, senses, and mind are disciplined to diminish attachments and to cultivate appropriate spiritual power are all considered as austerities. There are two divisions of austerities: external and internal. External austerities are those which are predominantly physical actions and visible to others in relation to external substances. Internal austerities are those which are predominantly mental actions and mainly do not involve external substances to the extent that they are not visible to others. Although external austerities may be gross and known to people, their significance is emphasized in the validation of internal austerities. The classification of external and internal austerities encompasses all comprehensive gross and subtle religious rules.
