Types of Character
The 'knowledge-obscuring' and 'cognitive obscuring' are the causes of ignorance obstacles; the obstructive karma is the cause of non-attainable obstacles; among the deluding, the perception-deluding leads to non-perception, and the character-deluding leads to nakedness, desire, women, possessions, anger, begging, and honor—these are the causes of seven obstacles; the experiencing karma, as indicated, gives rise to the possibly eleven obstacles. 13-16
5. Simultaneous Possible Obstacles in a Single Soul - Among the twenty-two possible obstacles, many of them are mutually contradictory, such as coldness, warmth, activity, rest, and possessions. The first two and the last three cannot co-exist at the same time; when coldness is present, warmth cannot be, and vice versa. Similarly, among activity, rest, and possessions, only one can exist at any given time. Therefore, considering two of the aforementioned five to be possible and three to be impossible at a time, it is accepted that a single soul can have a maximum of 19 simultaneous obstacles. 17.
Types of Character
Samayik, Chehda Usthapana, Parihara Vishuddhi, Sukshma Samparay, and Yatha Khyata—these five types of character are as stated. 18.
One should strive to remain in a state of spiritual purity; this is character. In terms of the subtlety of the outcome's purity, there are five distinctions of character: Samayik and others. They are as follows:
1. Samayik Character - To renounce all impure inclinations for the sake of being in a state of equanimity is called samayik character. The other four types of character—Chehda Usthapana and the rest—are samayik in nature, yet due to certain particularities of conduct and qualities, these four have been described separately from samayik. The initial ordination of a monk, whether for a brief time or for the entirety of one's life, is samayik.
