Tattvarthasutra
[9. 8-17 Hunger, thirst, cold, heat, disturbances from insects, nakedness, discomfort, women, non-vegetarian food, crying, killing, begging, lack of resources, illness, contact with grass, impurity, respect and offerings, wisdom, ignorance, and non-perception are twenty-two sufferings.
In the state of subtle existence and the state of partial attachment, fourteen sufferings are possible. In the case of Lord Jina, eleven sufferings are possible. In the state of bad existence, all twenty-two sufferings are possible. Wisdom and ignorance are sufferings due to knowledge-obscuring karma. Non-perception arises from delusion, and lack of resources arises from obstructive karma.
Nakedness, discomfort, women, non-vegetarian food, crying, begging, and respect and offerings arise from delusion of conduct.
All other sufferings arise from pain.
In one soul simultaneously, sufferings from 1 to 19 are possible by alternative consideration. As a means of purification, the sutrakara has described five aspects of sufferings - 1. Definition of sufferings, 2. Their number, 3. Classification by the type of qualified entity, 4. Directions of their causes, and 5. Possible sufferings in one living being simultaneously. Here, each aspect is considered in detail.
1. Definition - The condition that is equanimously bearable for remaining steady on the accepted path of righteousness and for the destruction of karmic bondage is called suffering. 8.
2. Number - Although the number of sufferings can be conceived as fewer in summary and more in detail, for the development of renunciation, specifically twenty-two sufferings are mentioned in the scripture. They are: 1-2 Hunger and thirst, any pain of hunger and thirst, nevertheless, maintaining equanimity and not taking food and water contrary to the accepted limit. 3-4 Cold and heat, no matter how much suffering arises from cold and heat, nevertheless, not consuming any inconceivable substances for relief and equitably bearing that suffering. 5. Disturbances from insects, such as mosquitoes and other creatures, maintaining equanimity without getting disturbed. 6. Nakedness - Equanimously enduring nakedness.
