Both merit and sin have their own natures. The only difference is that just as the auspicious experience arising from a distinct meritorious result is distinguished, the experience resulting from an inauspicious deed is lesser; similarly, the inauspicious experience arising from a distinct sinful result is distinguished, and the meritorious experience is lesser.
There are 42 natures recognized as being in the form of merit: seven are to be known, human life, divine life, life in other beings, human state, divine state, five types of corporeal entities; the material, changeable, nourishing, radiant, and karmic bodies; material limbs, changeable limbs, nourishing limbs, square formation, firm bull-rush-horn, good qualities of color, fragrance, taste, touch; human antecedent, divine antecedent, gross and light, obstruction, exhalation, daylight, illumination, good alternative paths, equity, quantity, each, stable, auspicious, well-favored, melodious, proposed, fame, renown, Tirthankara's name, and high lineage.
There are 82 natures recognized as being in the form of sin: five are knowledge-obscuring, nine are perception-obscuring, non-reputable, false beliefs, sixteen passions, nine subtle passions, hellish life, hellish state, life in other beings, one-sensed, two-sensed, three-sensed, four-sensed, excluding the first aggregation, the remaining five aggregates — half-firm bull-rush-horn, bull-rush, half-bull-rush, nail, and service; excluding the first establishment, the remaining five establishments — the fig tree circle, the almond, the hunchback, the dwarf, and the hood, unwholesome qualities of color, fragrance, taste, touch, hellish antecedent, life in non-human antecedents, influence, unwholesome alternative paths, immobile, subtle, inadequate, ordinary, unstable, inauspicious, ill-favored, ill-voiced, without gods, infamous, low lineage, and five hindrances. 26.
1. These 42 meritorious natures are well-known in various texts like Karma Nature and Navatattva. In the Digambara texts, these are recognized as meritorious. In this session, the meritorious qualities of Right Faith, laughter, enjoyment, and human nature—these four natures are not described as meritorious in any other text. The viewpoint that considers these four natures to be meritorious seems very ancient, as it is known that after the mention of these in the current session, the commentator also provided verses showing doctrinal differences and wrote that the secret of this viewpoint is not understood due to sectarian division. Yes, the followers of the fourteenth order must know.
