7. 19-32] Transgressions of Vows and Conduct
Transgressions are referred to as 187. Practical life is shaped according to the circumstances of country, time, etc., and the conditioning of human intellect; therefore, with changes in these circumstances and conditioning, life behavior also continues to change. This is why, even though the fundamental nature of character is one, the number and form of the rules accepted as its sustaining forms must necessarily change. Thus, the scriptures present the vows and rules of the householder in various ways, and changes in them will continue in the future. Nevertheless, the author here recognizes thirteen distinctions of householder dharma and states the transgressions of each distinction, which are as follows:
Transgressions of the Non-Violence Vow- 1. Bondage - Stopping or binding any living being from reaching its desired place. 2. Killing - Hitting with a stick or whip, etc. 3. Cutting Off - Piercing or cutting parts like ears, nose, skin, etc. 4. Overburdening - Imposing more weight than one can bear on a person or animal. 5. Preventing Food and Drink - Creating obstacles in someone's eating or drinking. The ideal path is that a vow-holding householder should never indulge in these faults without any purpose. However, if it becomes necessary to engage in them due to household tasks, it should be done with a gentle attitude.
Transgressions of the Truth Vow- 1. False Teaching - Misleading someone by distinguishing right from wrong and leading them down the wrong path. 2. Interpretations of Secrets - Separating a husband and wife or other loved ones for amusement due to attachment, or blaming one in front of another. 3. Fraudulent Writings - Creating false documents using seals, signatures, etc., and circulating counterfeit coins, etc. 4. Misappropriating a Trust - Taking advantage of a forgotten heritage or claiming part or all of it. 5. Breaking Sacred Mantras - Gossiping about one another or revealing someone's secrets with the intention of breaking mutual affection.
Transgressions of the Non-Stealing Vow- 1. Inciting Theft - Instigating someone to steal or agreeing with someone else’s suggestion to steal. 2. Receiving Stolen Goods - Accepting something brought by theft without the suggestion or agreement of the person who stole it. 3. Violating State Regulations - There are some restrictions imposed by the state on the import-export of goods, or tax provisions exist; violating these state rules. 4. Valuation Discrepancies - Disparities in the assessment of goods.
