6. 3-4] Types of Yoga and their Functions
Types of Yoga and their Functions
Auspicious: of Punya (merit). 3.
Inauspicious: of Papa (sin). 4. Auspicious Yoga is the influx of merit. Inauspicious Yoga is the influx of sin. The three types of yoga, such as Kayayoga, can be both auspicious and inauspicious.
The auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of Yoga are based on the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of intention. Yoga pursued with a good intention is auspicious, while Yoga driven by a bad intention is inauspicious. The auspicious and inauspicious nature of karmabond (bondage due to actions) does not depend on the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of yoga; because if we accept this, all yoga will be inauspicious, and none will remain auspicious, whereas auspicious Yoga can also lead to inauspicious karmas like knowledge-obscuring and others in the eighth and other stages of spiritual advancement.
Physical actions like violence, theft, and other harmful activities are inauspicious Kayayoga, while compassion, charity, and observance of celibacy are auspicious Kayayoga. Truthful yet harsh speech, false speech, and abusive speech are inauspicious Vayoga, while faultless truthful speech, gentle and cultured speech are auspicious Vayoga. Contemplating others' misfortunes or their death is inauspicious Manoyoga, while contemplating others' welfare and being pleased with their progress is auspicious Manoyoga.
The function of auspicious Yoga is the bondage of Punya nature, and the function of inauspicious Yoga is the bondage of Papa nature. The stipulation of these verses is relative because the Yoga occurring when the intensity of Kshaya (passion) is weak is auspicious, while the Yoga occurring when the intensity of passion is strong is inauspicious. Just as during inauspicious Yoga, there is a bondage of all merit and sin natures as much as possible in the initial stages and others.
