Tattvarthasutra
[4. 21-22]
The ability of the gods in inferior states is reduced to such an extent that they can at most reach the third hell. Even if their power is high, no god has descended below the third hell, nor will they ever do so.
2. The size of the body varies: in the first and second heavens, it is seven hands; in the third and fourth heavens, it is six hands; in the fifth and sixth heavens, it is five hands; in the seventh and eighth heavens, it is four hands; in the ninth to twelfth heavens, it is three hands; in the nine Grahavyakas, it is two hands; and in the Anuttaravimanas, it is one hand.
3. In the Paygrha-svargas, the number of vimanas decreases progressively. It is as follows: in the first heaven, there are thirty-two lakh; in the second, twenty-eight lakh; in the third, twelve lakh; in the fourth, eight lakh; in the fifth, four lakh; in the sixth, fifty thousand; in the seventh, forty thousand; in the eighth, six thousand; and from the ninth to twelfth, seven hundred; in the lower three Grahavyakas, there are one hundred eleven; in the middle three Gavyakas, there are one hundred seven; in the upper three Grahavyakas, there are one hundred; and in Anuttara, there are only five vimanas.
4. Abhiman - Abhiman means ego. Ego arises due to factors such as position, family, power, objects, wealth, and status. This ego gradually decreases in the higher gods due to the mildness of their passions.
In addition to these, five more matters concerning the gods are noteworthy which are not mentioned in the sutra: 1. Ucchvasa (breath), 2. Ahara (nutrition), 3. Vedana (pain), 4. Upapatha (path), and 5. Anubhava (experience). They are as follows:
1. Ucchvasa - As the lifespan of gods increases, the frequency of their ucchvasa also increases. For gods with a lifespan of ten thousand years, each ucchvasa occurs seven times in each instance. For gods with a lifespan comparable to a palyopama, they experience one ucchvasa in one day. For those with a lifespan like a sagaropama, the rule is that the ucchvasa occurs as many times as the duration of their lifespan in a specific period.
2. Ahara - Regarding nutrition, the rule is that gods with a lifespan of ten thousand years consume food every other day. Gods with a lifespan comparable to a palyopama eat after a separation of one day. For gods situated like a sagaropama, the rule is that they consume food after the number of years equal to their sagaropama lifespan.
1. The practice of separation is observed from the number two to the number nine.
