Chapter 4:
Devaloka
The third chapter primarily describes the conditions, regions, etc., of hell beings, humans, and animals. In this fourth chapter, the bodies of the gods, their conditions, their characteristics, etc., are being described.
Types of Gods
The gods belong to four categories.
1. Those with four bodies are called gods.
A specific group or species is termed a category. The four categories or types of gods are: 1. Bhavanapati, 2. Vyantara, 3. Jyotishka, and 4. Vaimānika.
The third category's leshya
"The third is the yellow leshya."
The third category is that of the yellow leshya.
Among the aforementioned four categories, the Jyotishka gods belong to the third category. They possess only the yellow (radiant) leshya. Here, 'leshya' refers to dravyaleshya, meaning physical characteristics, and not bhavaleshya as a specific manifestation; since all six bhavaleshyas are found within the gods of all four categories.
1. In the Digambara tradition, Bhavanapati, Vyantara, and Jyotishka are considered to have four leshyas from black to radiant in the three categories, while in the Shvetambara tradition, only Bhavanapati and Vyantara are regarded as having these four leshyas, and only the radiant leshya is present in the Jyotishka category. Due to this difference, the tenth and subsequently the seventh sessions are distinct in the Shvetambara tradition. In the Digambara tradition, instead of these two sessions, the single phrase 'Āditastṛṣu pītāntaleshyāḥ' is prevalent.
2. For a detailed explanation of leshya, see the appendix on the term 'leshya' in the Hindi text 'Chautha Karma Granth', p. 33.
