In the first chapter, the names of the seven substances are mentioned. In the subsequent nine chapters, they are discussed in detail. This chapter describes the essence of the 'Jiva' substance, including its distinctions and related topics.
Five attributes, their distinctions, and examples: the Upashamik, Kshayik, and mixed (Kshay-Upashamik) aspects of Jiva, the Udayik and Parinamik aspects. 1. Two, nine, eighteen, twenty-one, and three distinctions in order. 2. Right perception and conduct. 3. Knowledge, vision, charity, gain, enjoyment, and the potency of enjoyment. 4. Knowledge, ignorance, vision, charity, and other attained benefits, with four, three, and five distinctions in order, right perception, conduct, restraint, and non-restraint. 5. The movement, Kshay, Linga, false perception, ignorance, non-restraint, and insignificance consist of four, four, three, and each of the six distinctions. 6. The Jiva is characterized by the distinctions of Bhavya (elevated) and Abhavya (non-elevated), among others. 7.
The three Upashamik, Kshayik, and mixed (Kshay-Upashamik) attributes and the two Udayik and Parinamik attributes make a total of five attributes. These describe the nature of Jiva. In the sequence of the aforementioned five attributes, there are distinctions of two, nine, eighteen, twenty-one, and three.
Right perception and conduct are the two Upashamik attributes.
Knowledge, vision, charity, gain, enjoyment, utilization, potency, right perception, and conduct are the nine Kshayik attributes.
