Tattvarthasutra
[1. 21-23 For convenience, the two terms "bhavpratyaya" and "gunpratyaya" have been used for omniscience in relation to the state of existence. There are four classes of embodied souls: Narak, Dev, Tiryancha, and Manushya. Among these, the first two classes of beings possess bhavpratyaya, meaning they have omniscience from birth, while the last two classes possess gunpratyaya, meaning they acquire omniscience through qualities.
Question: If all beings possessing omniscience are embodied, then why is it that some attain it effortlessly at birth, while others have to make special efforts for it?
Answer: The peculiarity of actions is empirically established. Everyone knows that birds acquire the ability to fly in the sky as soon as they are born, while humans cannot fly without relying on airplanes or similar aids. We also observe that many individuals are born with poetic talent, while others do not attain it without effort.
There are six distinctions of omniscience in Tiryancha and Manushya: Anugamik, Ananugamik, Vardhman, Heeyman, Avasthit, and Anavasthit.
1. Just as the color applied to an object, such as a piece of cloth, remains intact even after removing it from the place where it was colored, similarly, the omniscience that remains intact even after leaving its place of origin is called Anugamik.
2. Just as a person's astrological knowledge may allow them to answer a question accurately only in a specific location and not in another, similarly, the omniscience that does not remain after leaving its place of origin is called Ananugamik.
3. Just as a spark from a matchstick or fire produced from a fire drill may be small at first but gradually increases as it receives more dry fuel, similarly, the omniscience that is limited in its initial state but progressively becomes more comprehensive due to the increasing purification of results is called Vardhman.
4. Just as the fire present in limited combustible objects diminishes gradually when it does not receive new fuel, similarly, the omniscience that is more comprehensive at the time of origin but becomes progressively less due to reduced result purity is called Heeyman.
