THE FIRST SCRIPTURE
"ACHARAGA SUTRA" is the very first Scripture of Jains. This is also a very important Sacred book. It is said that preaching in this book is the direct preaching of Lord - Mahavir. This Sutra or book is believed to be nearly 2,500 years old. I have translated few verses in English and are given below. These clearly show the depth of Jain - philosophy and the Jain approch towards Ahimsa. Every Jain should read and study this ancient book. English and Gujarati translation are available now.

Those who long for true and eternal happiness do not want to lead an uncontrolled life. Knowing the Cycle of birth and death they walk the path of right conduct with firmness (2, 3, 90)
For death there is no unsuitable time, it will strike at any time (2, 3, 91)
Those who are ignorant and are attached to wordly pleasures suffer again and again and for them real guidance is necessary (2, 3, 101)
One who knows other people's misery does not pursue worldly pleasures and keeps away from bondage of sinful acts.
શ્રી આચારોગ સૂત્ર
હે જીવ! તું સ્વયં જ તારે 'મિત્ર (સહાયક) છે. બહારના મિત્રની ઈચ્છા શા માટે કરે છે? જે કર્મોને દૂર કરનાર છે તે મોક્ષને પ્રાપ્ત કરનાર છે, જે મોક્ષને પ્રાપ્ત કરનાર છે તે કર્મોને દૂર કરનાર છે. એવું સમજીને વિચરવું જોઈએ.
જે સાચા અને શાશ્વત રખના અભિલાષી છે તે અસંયમી જીવનની ઈચ્છા કરતા નથી. જન્મ મરણના સ્વરૂપને સારી રીતે જાણી ચારિત્રમાં દઢ થઈ વિચરે છે. મૃત્યુના માટે કોઈ અકાળ નથી. સર્વ પ્રાણીઓને પિતાનું આયુ પ્રિય છે, સર્વ સુખના ઈચ્છુક છે, દુઃખ અને મરણ સર્વને પ્રતિકૂળ લાગે છે, અને પ્રત્યેક પ્રાણી જીવનની અભિલાષા રાખે છે. જીવવું બધાને પ્રિય લાગે છે.

હે પુરુષ ! તું પિતાના આત્માને નિગ્રહ કર. એમ કરવાથી તું દુઃખોથી મુક્ત થઈ જઈશ. હે પુરુષ ! તું સત્યનું જ સેવન કર. કારણ કે સત્યની આજ્ઞામાં પ્રવૃતિંત બુદ્ધિમાન સાધક સંસારને તરી જાય છે અને શ્રત–ચારિત્ર રૂપ ધર્મનું યથાર્થ રૂપથી પાલન કરી કલ્યાણ પ્રાપ્ત
