The most sacred book of the Jains, it was written by Bhadrabahu, who died in 357 BC. This book is read during the holy days of Paryushan.
The book contains the life of Lord Mahavir in detail and other biographies in short. It also gives code of conduct for monks.
During the olden days rich merchants used to employ caligraphers to write copies of this sacred book. Golden border, beautiful drawings and fine handwriting were the features of such manuscripts which also included multi-coloured miniature paintings. Thousands of manuscripts of Kalpa-Sutra are still in existence. Some are now found in the museums and libraries of Britain, France, Germany and USA.
સૌથી વધુ પૂજનીય - પવિત્ર ગણાતો ગ્રંથ. પર્યુષણના દિવસે દરમ્યાન આ ગ્રંથનું વાંચન થાય છે. તેના કર્તા છે ભદ્રબાહુ સ્વામી. કલ્પસત્રમાં તીર્થકર યસ્ત્રિ, થાવલી એટલે મહાવીર સ્વામી પછીના આચાર્યોની યાદી છે. અને સાધુઓના આચાર વિષે પણ થોડું છે. મહાવીર સ્વામીનું ચરિત્ર વિસ્તૃત રીતે આલેખવામાં આવ્યું છે તેથી આ ગ્રંથ પરના ભકિતભાવ કદાચ સવિશેષ છે. કલ્પસત્રમાં આપેલી આચાર્યોની યાદી તથા સાધ્વાચાર ભદ્રબાહુ પછીના કોઈ આચાર્યો લખ્યાં હશે તેમ મનાય છે.
જેને માટે લ્પસૂત્રનું એટલું બધું મહત્ત્વ છે કે આ ગ્રંથની હજારો હસ્તપ્રત વિદ્યમાન છે. ખાસ ચિત્રકાર લહીઆએ રાખીને ધનિક વર્ગ કલ્પસૂત્રની હસ્તપ્રત બનાવરાવતાં હતાં. ગ-બે-સ્ત્રી ચિત્રો યુકત આ હસ્તગત આપણા પ્રાચીન વારસે છે. જૈન ચિત્રકળા શીખવા-સમજવા માટે આ હસ્તપ્રતોને અભ્યાસ આવશ્યક છે. તાડપત્રી પર અને કાગળ પર આવી હસ્તપ્રતલખાતી, સુંદર ચિત્રા, સોનેરી બોર્ડર, મરોડદાર અક્ષર વાળી અનેક હસ્તપ્રતે ભારતની બહાર જર્મની, ફાંસ, અમેરિકા અને બ્રિટનમાં પણ વિદ્યમાન છે.
