AHIMSA: If Jainism has been described as an ethical system par excellence, Ahimsa is the keynote of this system. Ahimsa pervades the entire length and breadth of the Jain code of conduct. Jain-Ahimsa is not merely non-killing, it is reverence for life. It includes all the guidelines about environment and our atmosphere.
Jainism recognizes the sanctity of all life. As a community, Jain people run panjra-poles, which look after sick and invalid cattle. They feed hungry animals and birds as part of their feelings of Jiv-Daya (kindness towards all living beings).

> > જૈન ધર્મ એટલે અહિંસા-ધર્મ. અહિંસા એટલે માત્ર પ્રાણી-વધ ન કરવો તેટલું જ નહીં, વિશ્વના સૂક્ષ્મમાં સૂક્ષ્મ જીવની હત્યા ન થાય તેની કાળજી રાખવી. મન-વચન-કાયાથી હિંસા ન આચરવી. કેઈને આવી હિંસા આચરવા ભલામણ ન કરવી અને કોઈ પણ વ્યકિત આવું કરે તે તેને અનમેદન
(Approval) – ન આપવું. આ પ્રકારની અહિં સા તે જ સાચી અહિં સા. પ્રાણી માત્ર પ્રત્યે દયા-પ્રેમ-કરુણાની ભાવના રાખી શકાય તે અહિંસાનું પાલન શક્ય બને.
જૈન શાકાહાર તે હોય જ પરંતુ ખાવા-પીવાની બાબતમાં અન્ય નિયમ પણ પાળે છે જેથી અહિંસાના સિદ્ધાંતના પાલનમાં સરળતા રહે.
કતલખાને જતાં પશુઓને બચાવવાનું તથા તેમની સાર-સંભાળ લેવાનું કર્યો પણ જૈને કરે છે. ભારતમાં પશુ-રક્ષણની કાર્ય કરતી આવી સેંકડે પાંજરાપોળ છે.
અહિં સા પાલન અર્થે ઘણા જૈને રાત્રી ભેજન નથી કરતાં કંદમૂળ નથી ખાતાં (કંદમૂળ ઉખાડવાથી જમીનની અંદર રહેલાં નાના જીવ મરી જવાની સંભાવના રહે છે). અવારનવાર થવ સમયનાં નિયમ સ્વીકારે છે.
