જેવી છે તેવી પણ આ કથા સાંસરી દિલમાં પહેોંચે છે. અને તેથી જ ટૉલ્સ્ટૉયના ચરિતકાર માઁડ સાચું કહે છે કે,
"It will not tell its story; for it is a book not to read about, but to read. It is probably as strenuously moral a novel as was ever written....
