નીતિશાસ્ત્રપ્રવેશ કરવું. અન્ય કંઈ નહિ; ટૂંકામાં કહીએ તો “જ્ઞાન એટલે સ્મરણ.*
આ જ તત્ત્વનું પ્લેટોએ બીજી બાજુ ભિન્ન પ્રકારનું અતિ સુંદર વિવરણ કર્યું છે. “મેન ” નામના સંવાદમાં તેણે એવું બતાવ્યું છે કે, કોઈ તદ્દન અશિક્ષિત માણસને પણ જે સહેલા સહેલા
* વર્ડ્ઝવર્થ કવિતા કાવ્ય [utuition of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood માંની નીચેની લીટીઓ બહુશ્રુત વાચકને યાદ આવશે. તેમાંનાં તો અને પ્લેટનાં તોમાં ભેદ છે. કેમ કે માણસ જેમ જેમ મોટો થતો જાય છે તેમ તેમ તેની દિવ્યજ્ઞાન પ્રાપ્ત કરવાની શક્તિ ઘટતી જાય છે એમ વર્ડ્ઝવર્થ જણાવે છે ત્યારે પ્લેટને મત તેથી તદ્દન ભિન્ન છે. તે કહે છે કે, જ્ઞાન અધિકાધિક થતું જાય છે. એટલે પૂર્વજન્મના જ્ઞાનનું અધિકાધિક સ્મરણ થતું જાય છે. વઝવર્થની નીચેની કવિતા પરથી અન્ય પણ પુષ્કળ વિચાર સૂચવે છે, પરંતુ વિસ્તારમયથી અટકવું પડે છે :
“Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting : The soul that rises with us, our life's Star
Hath had elsewhere its seiting,
And cometh from afar : Not in entire forgetfulness, But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God who is our home : Heaven lies about us in our infancy ! Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing Boy. But he beholds the light, and whence it flows,
He sees it in his joy; The youth, who daily further from the east
Must travel, still is Nature's Priest And by the vision splendid
Is on his way attended ; At length the man perceives it die away, And fade into the light of common day."
