( sympathy ) પપાળી ઉત્તેજિત કરી તમે સાધારણ માણૢસને પાપકર્મોથી પરાવૃત્ત કરી શકશેા; પણ કોઈ તામસી સ્વભાવને, નાસ્તિક, સાહસી અને અવળા કાળજાને માણસ જે કહેશે કે મને લેકના દુ:ખની દરકાર નથી, કાયદાના મને ભય નથી, ( કારણ, કેવા પ્રસંગે કેવી રીતે કાયદાને! ભંગ કરવાથી ગુના દખાઈ રહે છે તે હું જાણું છું), સ્વનક સવ ઢાંગ છે, હું તે મારું સુખ જ જોઇશ; ' તે! એમ કહેનાર માણસને ‘ સ્વસુખ ' જ પ્રત્યેક માણસનું ધ્યેય હોય છે અને હેવું જોઈએ, એમ કહેનાર વિકાસવાદ કંઈ પણ કહી શકશે નહિ; એ વાત લેસ્લી સ્ટીફન સ્વીકારે છે; પણ તરત જ વિકાસવાદના સમનાથે કહે છે કે, એવું શાસ્ત્ર ક્યાં છે કે, સ્વસુખ જ ધ્યેય હેાવું સદાચારસ`પન્ન માણસનું ધ્યેય કેવળ સ્વસુખ નથી હેતું. કહે છે કે, જેના હૃદયમાં સાત્ત્વિક પ્રેમ વસે છે. કિવા મસ્તકમાં વિવેકબુદ્ધિ જાગ્રત છે તે માણસને સ્વસુખની આહુતિથી પરસુખ અધિક સાધ્ય થતું જણાય છે તે તે પેાતાનું અલ્પસુખ ત્યજી દઈ પરા માટે મથે છે.” *. પરંતુ આવું કબૂલ કરવું તે વિકાસવાદી

* A thoroughly selfish man prefers to spend money on gratifying his own senses which might save some family from misery and starvation. He prefers to do so, let us say, even at the cost of breaking some recognised obligation-of telling a lie, or stealing. How can we argue with him?
