गुरुरुपायः ।
(શિવસૂત્ર ૨-૬)
Guru is the means.
The difficulties one encounters on the journey (to the Divine) are innumerable. No man can surmount them by himself. It is the guidance and the power of the Guru working in the disciple that ferry him across.
The ultimate action that liberates by untying the knots in the heart and dissipating the last shades of ignorance, comes not from the puny effort of man but from the Divine Grace, which for the disciple acts through the Guru. The Guru is the indispensable means.
