આત દર્શન દીપિકા. પાશ્ચાત્ય પ્રાચીન તેમજ આધુનિક વિચારકે પૈકી કેટલાક પુનર્જન્મ માને છે એ પણ સેંધવા જેવી હકીકત છે.
૧ ઈસ્વીય છઠ્ઠી શતાબ્દી પૂર્વે ભારતવર્ષમાં આવી આ દેશ પાસેથી પુનર્જન્મને સિદ્ધાંત સ્વીકારી ગયેલા પાથેગોરાસ (Pythagoras) પુનર્જન્મને transmigration of soul થી નિર્દેશ છે. આ સંબંધમાં એમના ઉદ્ગાર એ છે કે
All things are but altered, nothing dies, And here and there the unbodied spirit flies, By Time and force or sickness disposed
And lodges where it lights in man or best." અથોત પ્રત્યેક પદાર્થમાં પરિવર્તન થાય છે, કિંતુ કોઈને પણ (સર્વા શે ) નાશ થતો નથી. વળી કાળ, બળ કે માંદગીને લઈને અશરીરી બનેલ આત્મા અહીં તહીં વિહરે છે અને મનુષ્ય કે પશુ તરીકે પછી અવતરે છે. આ માન્યતાને કવીશ્વર શેકસપીરે (Shakespeare) “Merchant of Venice” નામના નાટકમાં ગૂંથી છે.
પ્રાચીન દાર્શનિકેના શિરતાજ પ્લેટ ( Plato ) પુનર્જન્મને સ્વીકાર કરે છે, કેમકે તેમણે
“ The soul always weaves her garment anew." અર્થાત આત્મા સદા પિતાને માટે નવાં નવાં વસ્ત્રો વણે છે. આ ભાવ ભગવદ્દગીતા (અ ૨ )ના બાવીસમાં કોકના પૂર્વાર્ધમાં નજરે પડે છે. જુઓ પૃ. ૪૦૭.
વળી આ તત્ત્વવેત્તાન એ પણ ઉદગાર છે કે
"The soul has a natural strengtb which will hold out and be borne many times." અથત આત્માની એક એવી સર્ગિક શક્તિ છે કે જે ટકી રહેશે તેમજ જે વારંવાર ધારણ કરાશે.
અર્વાચીન વિચારકામાં શેપનહેર (Schopenhauer) કે જેઓ ઉપનિષદેને આશક છે તેઓ કયે છે કે
“I have also remarked that it is at once obvious to every one who hears of it (rebirth) for the first time." અર્થાત મેં એ પણ નિવેદન કર્યું છે કે જે કોઈ પહેલી વાર પુનર્જન્મ વિષે સાંભળે છે તેને તે એકદમ સ્પષ્ટ દેખાય છે.
પુનર્જન્મ પરત્વે ધુમ ( Hume )નું કથન એ છે કે
" Metempeychosis is the only theory of the soul to which Philosophy can hearken, since what is incorruptible must b3 ungenerable." અર્થાત પુનર્જન્મ એ જ એક એ આત્મ-સિદ્ધાંત છે કે જેને તત્ત્વજ્ઞાન સાંભળી શકે, કારણ કે જે અક્ષય હોય તે જ અનુત્પાલ હેય.
5.
