उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र : एक परिशीलन
बाद में जिसका अध्ययन किया जाय, यही अर्थ उचित प्रतीत होता है । उत्तराध्ययन में प्रयुक्त अध्ययन शब्द से भी यही अर्थं प्रतीत होता है क्योंकि अन्य किसी आगम ग्रन्थ के साथ अध्ययन शब्द का प्रयोग नहीं हुआ है ।
भाषा-शैली और महत्त्व :
भाषा-शैली की दृष्टि से उत्तराध्ययन का महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान है । भाषाशास्त्रियों की दृष्टि में उत्तराध्ययन की भाषा अत्यन्त प्राचीन है । आचार्य तुलसी ने उत्तराध्ययन की भाषा को महाराष्ट्री से प्रभावित अर्धमागधी कहा है । " भाषा और विषय की प्राचीनता की दृष्टि से समस्त अंग और अंगबाह्य आगम-साहित्य में आचाराङ्ग और सूत्रकृताङ्ग की भाषा के बाद तीसरे स्थान पर उत्तराध्ययन का नाम गिनाया जाता है । भाषा-शैली की

2. The language of this canon is a Prakrit which is known as Arşa ( i. e., “ the language of the Rsis" ) or Ardha - Magadhi (i. e., "half-Magadhi"). Mahāvīra himself is said to have preached in this language. There is however, a difference between the language of prose and that of verses. As was the case with the Pāli verses in the Buddhist Canon, here too, the verses present more archai forms. The most archai language is to be found in the Ayaraṁga--Sutta, and next to this, in the Suyagaḍamga-Sutta and the Uttarajjhayaņa. Ardha-Magadhi is quite different from Jaina Mahārāṣtrī, the dialect of the non-canonical Jaina texts.
