Subject-Matter and Date of Composition
The Avasyaka is a composite śruta consisting of six chapters (adhyayanas). In the list of the Agamas in the Nandi, there is no mention of the chapters of any particular Āgama, excepting the Avaśyaka whose chapters are mentioned there It is evident from this that up till the time of Nandi the memory of the six chapters of the Avaśyaka was alive, though the unitary character of the Avaśyaka was an accomplished fact by that time. The names of the six chapters are-(i) sâmāyika, (ii) caturvimśastava, (iii) vandanā, (iv) pratik amaņa, (v) kāyotsarga, and (vi) pratyākhyāna,
In the Digambara literature, there is slight difference in the designation and order of the chapters which are-(i) samatā, (ii) stava, (iii) vandanā, (iv) pratikramana. (v) pratyākhyāna and (vi) visarga.?
In the Anuyogadvāra the topics of the six chapters have been explained as follows:-3 1. Sāmāyika
Abstinence from sinful activities. 2 Caturvimśastava Hymn in praise of the 24 tirthankaras. 3. Vandana
Offering homage to the qualified. 4. Pratikramana Repentence for the deviations. 5. Kayotsarga
Curing the lapses 6. Pratyākhyāna Appropriation of the merits. In the Avasyakanir yukti we find a detailed exposition of sāmāyika.
For an elaborate information about kāyotsarga, one should consult the Kāyorsarga-śataka. Pratikramana is of six kinds :
1. Uccara pratikramana 2. Prasravana pratikramaņa 3. Ityarika pratikramaņa 4. Yāvatkathika pratikramana 5. Yatkiñcitmithya pratikramana 6. Svapnāntika pratikramana
The pratikramaņa occupies the eighth place in the ten kalpas. It was not 1 Nandi, sutra 75:
