The Ćurņikāra holds that this Āgama is 'caraṇakaraṇānuyoga (treatise on conduct). Silänkasūri has classified it under "Drawyānuyoga' (treatise on substances). According to him the Ācārānga is primarily a caraṇakaranayoga while 'Sūtrakṣitānga' is primarily a 'Drawyānuyoga'.
The Samawāya and the Nandi give an account of the 'Dwādaśāngi.' At the end of the account of the Angas, the lines read 'ewam carņakaranaparuwaņayā'. Abhayadeva Sūri connotes the meaning of 'caraṇa' as 'Sramana-dharma' and of 'Karana' as 'Pinda-visuddhi, Samiti etc.
The cūrņikara has regarded the Kālikasruta as a 'caraṇakaranayoga' and the 'Driştiwāda' as a 'drawyanuyoga'. 4
The Dwādaśāngi primarily expounds the Driştiwāda, treatise on substances and secondarily the code of conduct. The Curņikara legimately regards this Āgama primarily as a treatise on the code of conduct while the Vrittikāra lying stress upon its ascertainment of Dravya (substance), calls it DravyaŚaśtra (a treatise on substance). Both of these classifications have a dialectical variation.
