तृतीय प्रतिपत्ति : जंबूद्वीप क्यों कहलाता है ?] [441 कहि णं भंते ! अणाढियस्स जाव समता वत्तव्वया रायहाणीए, महिडिए / अदुत्तरं च णं गोयमा ! जंबुद्दीवे दीवे तत्थ तत्थ देसे तहि तहि बहवे जंबूरुक्खा जंबूवणा जंबूवणसंडा णिच्चं कुसुमिया जाव सिरीए अईव उवसोभेमाणा उक्सोभेमाणा चिट्ठति / से तेणढेणं गोयमा ! एवं वुच्चइजंबुद्दीवे अंबुद्दीवे / अदुत्तरं च णं गोयमा ! जंबुद्दीवस्स सासए णामधेज्जे पण्णत्ते जन्न कयावि गासि जाव णिच्चे। [152-4] वह जंबू-सुदर्शना अन्य बहुत से तिलक वृक्षों, लकुट वृक्षों यावत् राय वृक्षों और हिंगु वृक्षों से सब ओर से घिरी हुई है / जबू-सुदर्शना के ऊपर बहुत से आठ-आठ मंगल-स्वस्तिक श्रीवत्स यावत् दर्पण, कृष्ण चामर ध्वज यावत् छत्रातिछत्र हैं-यह सब वर्णन पूर्ववत् जानना चाहिए। जंबू-सुदर्शना के बारह नाम हैं, यथा-१. सुदर्शना, 2. अमोहा, 3. सुप्रबुद्धा, 4. यशोधरा, 5. विदेहजंबू, 6. सौमनस्या, 7. नियता, 8. नित्यमंडिता, 9. सुभद्रा, 10. विशाला, 11. सुजाता, 12. सुमना / सुदर्शना जंबू के ये 12 पर्यायवाची नाम हैं। हे भगवन् ! जंबू-सुदर्शना को जंबू-सुदर्शना क्यों कहा जाता है ? गौतम ! जम्बू-सुदर्शना में जंबूद्वीप का अधिपति अनादृत नाम का महद्धिक देव रहता है। यावत् उसकी एक पल्योपम की स्थिति है / वह चार हजार सामानिक देवों यावत् जंबूद्वीप की जंबूसुदर्शना का और अनादृता राजधानी का यावत् आधिपत्य करता हुआ विचरता है / हे भगवन् ! अनादृत देव की अनादृता राजधानी कहां है ? गौतम ! पूर्व में कही हुई विजया राजधानी की पूरी वक्तव्यता यहाँ कहनी चाहिए यावत् वहां महद्धिक अनादृत देव रहता है / गौतम ! अन्य कारण यह है कि जम्बूद्वीप नामक द्वीप में यहाँ वहाँ स्थान स्थान पर जम्बूवृक्ष, जंबूवन और जंबूवनखंड हैं जो नित्य कुसुमित रहते है यावत् श्री से अतीव अतीव उपशोभित होते विद्यमान हैं। इस कारण गौतम ! जम्बूद्वीप, जम्बूद्वीप कहलाता है / अथवा यह भी कारण है कि जम्बूद्वीप यह शाश्वत नामधेय है / यह पहले नहीं था-- ऐसा नहीं, वर्तमान में नहीं है, ऐसा भी नहीं और भविष्य में नहीं होगा ऐसा नहीं, यावत् यह नित्य है। विवेचन प्रस्तुत सूत्र में जम्बू-सुदर्शना के बारह नाम बताये गये हैं। वे नाम सार्थक नाम हैं और विशेष अभिप्रायों को लिये हैं / उन नामों की सार्थकता इस प्रकार है 1. सुदर्शना-अति सुन्दर और नयन मनोहारी होने से यह सुदर्शना कही जाती है / 2. अमोधा-अपने नाम को सफल करने वाली होने से यह अमोघा कहलाती है / इसके होने से ही जम्बूद्वीप का आधिपत्य सार्थक और सफल होता है, अन्यथा नहीं। अतः यह अमोघा ऐसे सार्थक नाम वाली है। 3. सुप्रबुद्धा-मणि, कनक और रत्नों से सदा जगमगाती रहती है, अतएव यह सुप्रबुद्धाउन्निद्र है।
