The translation preserving the Jain terms is as follows:
It is prohibited to possess more than the prescribed Pramana and Agama-prescribed limits. Defecation and urination on living soil and other prohibited places is prohibited.
The matters discussed and the actions prohibited in the Sixteenth Uddesa are also discussed in the Pachanga Dvitiya Srutaskandha, Brihatkalpika, and Dasasrutaskandha. The Agama literature has cautioned the sadhaka at various places not to indulge in such tendencies that corrupt the life of self-restraint.
The Seventeenth Uddesa has 155 sutras. In some copies, there are 151 sutras. There is a commentary of 590,459,996 gatha verses on them. Out of curiosity, binding and releasing trembling living beings with ropes, etc. is prohibited. Out of curiosity, making and wearing various types of garlands, ornaments, and jewelry is prohibited. Various types of clothing are also mentioned here. A Sramana should have a serious nature devoid of curiosity. Curiosity also leads to worldly defamation. The prohibition includes: getting household work done by Sramanas and Sramanis, taking food by opening sealed containers, taking food placed on living soil, taking freshly prepared cold water, and claiming one's physical characteristics to be worthy of the Acharya position.
Playing various musical instruments, laughing, dancing, making animal-like sounds, craving to listen to various musical instruments, and attachment to sound perception - for these, the present Uddesa mentions the Laghuchamasi Prayaschitta.
The prohibition of such tendencies contrary to the practice of self-restraint is mentioned in the Acharanga Dvitiya Srutaskandha. In every chapter, emphasis is placed on the strict observance of rules and regulations for the self-restrained sadhaka.
The Eighteenth Uddesa has 73 sutras. In some copies, there are 74 sutras. There is a commentary of 5997-6027 gatha verses on them. From the first to the thirty-second sutra, various aspects of boat travel have been contemplated. Although the Sramana is a complete renouncer of the violence against mobile beings, yet there is also a provision for boat travel in the Acharangasutra, Brihatkalpika, and Dasasrutaskandha. But it should be remembered that this boat is only for the prescribed water route. He uses it only for the reasons mentioned in the Agamas or as specified in the Agamas. The commentator has discussed this in detail in the present text. The Acharanga Dvitiya Srutaskandha also has rules and prohibitions regarding boat travel. Sutras 33 to 73 mention the consumption of defects related to clothing. These tendencies are said to be Laghuchaumasi Prayaschitta. The present Uddesa discusses the two aspects of boat and clothing.
The Nineteenth Uddesa has 35 sutras. In some copies, there are 40 sutras. There is a commentary of 6028-6271 gatha verses on them. Applying defects for medicine, bringing more than the prescribed three doses of a specific medicine, keeping it with you during the Vihara, consuming defects related to the preparation of medicine, before the evening, after the evening, etc.
