[निशीथसूत्र
हारय-प्रायश्चित्त--
३८. जे भिक्खू मुहं विप्फालिय-विप्फालिय हसइ, हसंतं वा साइज्जइ ।
३८. जो भिक्षु मुह, फाड़-फाड़ कर हँसता है या हँसने वाले का अनुमोदन करता है । (उसे लघुमासिक प्रायश्चित्त आता है ।)
विवेचन-मूह को अधिक खोल कर या विकृत कर अमर्यादित हँसने का यहाँ प्रायश्चित्त कहा गया है । दशवैकालिक सूत्र में कहा गया है कि आपस में बातें करने व हँसी ठट्ठा करने में समय खर्च न करते हुए साधु को सदा स्वाध्याय ज्ञान ध्यान में लीन रहना चाहिए। यथा
"णिदं च ण बहु मज्जा , सप्पहासं विवज्जए। मिहो कहाहिं न रमे, सज्झायम्मि रओ सया॥"
-दशवै० अ० ८, गा० ४२ आचारांग सूत्र में कहा है कि "हास्य का त्याग करने वाला भिक्षु है, अतः साधु को हास्य करने वाला नहीं होना चाहिए।" यथा"हासं परिजाणइ से णिग्गंथे, णो हासणए सिया ।
-प्राचा० श्रु० २, अ० १६ साधु को कुतूहल वृत्ति रहित एवं गम्भीर स्वभाव वाला होना चाहिए और कुतूहलवृत्ति वाले की संगति भी नहीं करनी चाहिए।
इस तरह का हँसना मोह का कारण होता है अथवा दूसरों को हँसी उत्पन्न कराने वाला होता है । लोकनिंदा भी होती है । वायुकाय की तथा संपातिम जीवों की विराधना भी होती है । दूसरे के अपमान, रोष या वैर का उत्पादक भी हो सकता है। भाष्यकार ने यहाँ एक दृष्टांत दिया है
“एक राजा रानी ने साथ झरोखे में बैठा था। उसे राजपथ की ओर देखते हुए रानी ने कहा -"मृत मनुष्य हंस रहा है ।" राजा के पूछने पर रानी ने साधु की तरफ इशारा किया और स्पष्टीकरण किया कि इहलौकिक संपूर्ण सुखों का त्याग कर देने से यह मृतक के समान है, फिर भी हंस रहा है ।" अतः साधु को मर्यादित मुस्कराने के अतिरिक्त हा-हा करते हुए नहीं हंसना चाहिये । पार्श्वस्थ आदि को संघाटक के आदान-प्रदान का प्रायश्चित्त
