२३ अहासुहं देवाणुप्पिया ! मा पडिबंधं।
जाव जहा जमाली तहा आपुच्छइ [तए णं से धण्णे कुमारे समणेणं भगवया महावीरेणं एवं वुत्ते समाणे हट्ठ-तुढे समर्ण भगवं महावीरं तिक्खुत्तो जावणमंसित्ता, जाव जेणेव अम्मा-पियरो तेणेव उवागच्छइ, उवागच्छित्ता अम्मा-पियरो जएणं विजएणं वद्धावेइ, जएणं विजएणं वद्धावित्ता एवं वयासी एवं खलु अम्मयाओ! मए समणस्स भगवओ महावीरस्स अंतियं धम्मे णिसंते, से वि य मे धम्मे इच्छिए, पडिच्छिए, अभिरुइए। तएणं धण्णं कुमारं अम्मा-पियरो एवं वयासी–धण्णे सिणं तुमं जाया ! कयत्थे सिणं तुमं जाया ! कयपुण्णे सि णं तुमं जाया ! कयलक्खणे सि णं तुमं जायां ! जं णं तुमे समणस्स भगवओ महावीरस्स अंतियं धम्मे णिसंते, से वि य धम्मे इच्छिए, पडिच्छिए, अभिरुइए।
तए णं से धण्णे कुमारे अम्मा-पियरो दोच्चंपि तच्चं पि एवं वयासी–एवं खलु मए अम्मयाओ! समणस्स भगवओ महावीरस्स अंतिए धम्मे णिसंते, जाव अभिरुइए। तए णं अहं अम्मयाओ ! संसारभयउव्विग्गे, भीए जम्म-जरा-मरणेणं, तं इच्छामि णं अम्मयाओ ! तुब्भेहिं अब्भणुण्णाए समाणे समणस्स भगवओ महावीरस्स अंतियं मुंडे भवित्ता अगाराओ अणगारियं पव्वइत्तए।
___उस काल और उस समय में श्रमण यावत् निर्वाणसंप्राप्त भगवान् महावीर काकंदी नगरी में पधारे। परिषद् निकली। कोणिक की तरह जितशत्रु राजा भी दर्शनार्थ निकला। जमाली के समान धन्यकुमार भी साज-सज्जा के साथ निकला। विशेष यह है कि धन्यकुमार पैदल चल कर ही भगवान् की सेवा में पहुंचा।
श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी के पास धर्म सुनकर और हृदय में धारण करके धन्यकुमार हर्षित और सन्तुष्ट हृदय वाला हुआ यावत् खड़े होकर श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी को तीन बार प्रदक्षिणा करके वन्दन-नमस्कार किया और इस प्रकार कहा
हे भगवन् ! मैं निर्ग्रन्थ प्रवचन पर श्रद्धा करता हूँ। हे भगवन् ! मैं निर्ग्रन्थ प्रवचन पर विश्वास करता हूँ। हे भगवन् ! मैं निर्ग्रन्थ प्रवचन पर रुचि करता हूँ। हे भगवन् ! मैं निर्ग्रन्थ-प्रवचन के अनुसार प्रवृत्ति करने को तत्पर हुआ हूँ। हे भगवन् ! यह निर्ग्रन्थ-प्रवचन सत्य है, तथ्य है, असंदिग्ध है, जैसा कि आप कहते हैं।
हे भगवन् ! मैं अपनी माता—भद्रा सार्थवाही की आज्ञा लेकर, गृहवास का त्याग करके, मुण्डित होकर आपके पास अनगार-धर्म स्वीकार करना चाहता हूँ।
भगवान् ने कहा देवानुप्रिय ! जैसे तुम्हें सुख हो वैसा करो, धर्म-कार्य में समयमात्र भी प्रमाद मत करो।
जब श्रमण भगवान् महावीर ने धन्यकुमार से पूर्वोक्त प्रकार से कहा तो धन्यकुमार हर्षित और सन्तुष्ट हुआ। उसने भगवान् को तीन बार प्रदक्षिणा करके वन्दन-नमस्कार किया। फिर वह अपने माता-पिता के पास आया और जय-विजय शब्दों से बधाकर इस प्रकार बोला हे माता-पिता ! मैंने श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी से धर्म सुना है। वह धर्म मुझे इष्ट, अत्यन्त इष्ट और रुचिकर हुआ है।
तब माता-पिता ने धन्यकुमार से कहा—बेटा ! तुम धन्य हो ! तुम कृतार्थ हो, बेटा ! तुम पुण्यशाली हो, बेटा! तुम सुलक्षण हो कि तुमने भगवान् के मुख से धर्म श्रवण किया और वह धर्म तुम्हें प्रिय, अतिशय प्रिय और
