अभिमत है कि पिता के द्वारा अठारह श्रेणियों के स्वामी बनाये जाने के कारण वह श्रेणिक बिम्बसार कहलाया । २९
जैन, बौद्ध और वैदिक वाङ्मय में श्रेणी और प्रश्रेणी की यत्र-तत्र चर्चाएं आई हैं। जम्बूद्वीपपण्णत्ति ३० जातक मूगपक्खजातक में श्रेणी की संख्या अठारह मानी है। महावस्तु में ३२ तीस श्रेणियों का उल्लेख है। यजुर्वेद में ३३ त्रेपन का उल्लेख है। किसी-किसी का अभिमत है कि महती सेना होने से या सेनिय गोत्र होने से उसका नाम श्रेणिक पड़ा । ३४ श्रीमद्भागवत पुराण में श्रेणिक के अजातशत्रु ५ विधिसार नाम भी आये हैं। दूसरे स्थलों में विन्ध्यसेन और सुविन्दु नाम के भी उल्लेख हुए हैं। ३७

आवश्यक हरिभद्रीयावृत्ति ३८ और त्रिषष्ठिशलाकापुरुषचरित्र ९ के अनुसार श्रेणिक के पिता प्रसेनजित थे । दिगम्बर आचार्य हरिषेण ने श्रेणिक के पिता का नाम उपश्रेणिक लिखा है। " आचार्य गुणभद्र ने उत्तरपुराण १ में श्रेणिक के पिता का नाम कुणिक लिखा है जो अन्यान्य आगम और आगमेतर ग्रन्थों से संगत नहीं है। वह श्रेणिक का पिता नहीं किन्तु पुत्र है। ४२ अन्यत्र ग्रन्थों में श्रेणिक के पिता का नाम महापद्म, हेमजित्, क्षेत्रोजा, क्षेत्प्रोजा भी मिलते हैं।

जैन साहित्य में श्रेणिक की छब्बीस रानियों के नाम उपलब्ध होते हैं। उनके ३५ पुत्रों का भी वर्णन मिलता है। ज्ञातासूत्र ४५ अन्तकृद्दशा निरयावलिका, ४७ आवश्यकचूर्णि, निशीथचूर्णि, त्रिषष्ठिशलाकापुरुषचरित्र, उपदेशमाला दोघट्टी टीका, श्रेणिक चरित्र प्रभृति में उनके अधिकांश पुत्र, पौत्र और महारानियों के भगवान् महावीर के पास प्रव्रज्या लेने के उल्लेख हैं। वे सभी ज्ञान, ध्यान व उत्कृष्ट तप-जप की साधना कर स्वर्गवासी होते हैं। विस्तारभय से हम उन सभी का उल्लेख नहीं

In the Jnatasutra 45 Antakriddasha Nirayavali, 47 Aavashyakchurni, Nishitchurni, Trishatshtisalaakapurushcharitra, Upadeshamala Doghatti Tika, Shrenik Charitra etc., there are mentions of most of their sons, grandsons and maharanis taking pravrjya from Bhagwan Mahavira.
