[ अन्तकृद्दशा
बाहर उद्यान में विराजमान हुए, तब इनके समवसरण में) चार प्रकार के देव उपस्थित हुए। कृष्ण वासुदेव भी वहाँ आये। तदनन्तर उनके दर्शन करने को गौतम कुमार भी तैयार हुए। जैसे मेघ कुमार श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी के पास गये थे वैसे ही गौतम कुमार भी भगवान् अरिष्टनेमि के चरणों में गए और धर्म का श्रवण किया। विशेष यह कि भगवान् अरिष्टनेमि से कहा- देवानुप्रिय ! मैं अपने मातापिता से पूछकर आपके पास दीक्षा ग्रहण करूंगा । जिस प्रकार श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी के पास मेघ कुमार दीक्षित हुए थे यावत् (ठीक उसी प्रकार गौतम कुमार ने भी ) [ स्वयं ही पंचमुष्ठिक लोच किया । लोच करके जहाँ अरिष्टनेमि भगवान् थे वहाँ आये । आकर श्रमण भगवान् अरिष्टनेमि को तीन बार दाहिनी ओर से आरंभ करके प्रदक्षिणा की। फिर वन्दना - नमस्कार किया और कहा
भगवन्! यह संसार जरा और मरण से ( जरा-मरण रूप अग्नि से) आदीप्त है, प्रदीप्त है । भगवन्, यह संसार आदीप्त और प्रदीप्त है। जैसे कोई गाथापति घर में आग लग जाने पर, उस घर में जो अल्प भार वाली और बहुमूल्य वस्तु होती है उसे, ग्रहण करके स्वयं एक ओर चला जाता है । वह सोचता है " अग्नि में जलने से बचाया हुआ यह पदार्थ मेरे लिए आगे-पीछे हित के लिए, सुख के लिए, क्षमा (समर्थता) के लिए, कल्याण के लिए और भविष्य में उपयोग के लिए होगा। इसी प्रकार मेरा भी यह एक आत्मा रूपी भांड (वस्तु) है, जो मुझे इष्ट है, कान्त है, प्रिय है, मनोज्ञ है और अतिशय मनोहर है - इस आत्मा को मैं निकाल लूँगा - जरा - मरण की अग्नि में भस्म होने से बचा लूँगा, तो यह संसार – जन्म - मरण का उच्छेद करने वाला होगा। अतएव मैं चाहता हूँ कि देवानुप्रिय ! (आप) स्वयं ही मुझे प्रव्रजित करें – मुनिवेष प्रदान करें, स्वयं ही मुझे मुंडित करें - - मेरा लोच करें, स्वयं ही प्रतिलेखन आदि सिखावें, स्वयं ही सूत्र और अर्थ प्रदान करके शिक्षा दें, स्वयं ही ज्ञानादिक आचार, गोचरी, विनय, वैनयिक (विनय का फल), चरणसत्तरी, करणसत्तरी, संयमयात्रा और मात्रा (भोजन का परिमाण) आदि रूप धर्म का प्ररूपण करें।
तत्पश्चात् श्रमण भगवान् अरिष्टनेमि ने गौतमकुमार को स्वयं प्रव्रज्या प्रदान की और स्वयं ही यावत् आचारगोचर आदि धर्म की शिक्षा दी कि - हे देवानुप्रिय ! इस प्रकार – पृथ्वी पर युग मात्र दृष्टि रखकर चलना चाहिए, इस प्रकार - निर्जीव भूमि पर खड़ा होना चाहिए, इस प्रकार - -भूमि का प्रमार्जन करके बैठना चाहिए, इस प्रकार - सामायिक का उच्चारण करके, शरीर की प्रमार्जना करके शयन करना चाहिए, इस प्रकार – वेदना आदि कारणों से निर्दोष आहार करना चाहिए, इस प्रकार - हित मित और मधुर भाषण करना चाहिए । इस प्रकार - अप्रमत्त एवं सावधान होकर प्राण (विकलेन्द्रिय), भूत (वनस्पतिकाय) जीव (पंचेन्द्रिय) और सत्त्व ( शेष एकेन्द्रिय) की रक्षा करके संयम का पालन करना चाहिए। इस विषय में तनिक भी प्रमाद नहीं करना चाहिए।
तत्पश्चात् गौतमकुमार मुनि ने श्रमण भगवान् अरिष्टनेमि के निकट इस प्रकार का यह धर्म सम्बन्धी उपदेश सुनकर और हृदय में धारण करके सम्यक् प्रकार से उसे अंगीकार किया। वे भगवान् की आज्ञा के अनुसार गमन करते, उसी प्रकार खड़े रहते, उसी प्रकार बैठते, उसी प्रकार शयन करते, उसी प्रकार आहार करते और उसी प्रकार मधुर भाषण करते हुए प्रमाद और निद्रा का त्याग करके प्राणों, भूतों, जीवों और सत्वों की यतना करके संयम का आराधन करने लगे ] । अनगार बन जाने पर गौतम निर्ग्रन्थसन्मुख रखकर भगवान् की आज्ञाओं का पालन करते हुए विचरने लगे ।

Notably, he said to Bhagwan Arishtanemi - Devanupriya! I will ask my parents and then take initiation from you. Just as Megha Kumar was initiated by Shraman Bhagwan Mahavira Swami, so too [Gautam Kumar himself] performed Panchmusthik Loch. After performing Loch, he came to where Arishtanemi Bhagwan was. Arriving there, he circumambulated Shraman Bhagwan Arishtanemi three times, starting from the right side. Then he offered his obeisance - Namaskar and said
Bhagwan! This world is ablaze, illuminated by old age and death (by the fire of old age and death). Bhagwan, this world is ablaze and illuminated. Just as a householder, when fire breaks out in his house, takes the light and valuable things from that house and moves himself to one side. He thinks, "This material saved from burning in the fire will be for my benefit in the future, for my happiness, for my ability, for my well-being, and for future use." Similarly, this soul-like vessel (object) of mine is dear to me, beloved, pleasing, attractive, and extremely beautiful - I will take out this soul - I will save it from being consumed by the fire of old age and death, then this world - birth - death will be destroyed. Therefore, I want Devanupriya! (you) to initiate me yourself - give me the robes of a monk, shave my head yourself - perform my Loch, teach me writing and other things yourself, teach me by providing sutras and their meanings yourself, teach me the principles of Dharma like knowledge, conduct, discipline, the fruits of discipline, Charanasattari, Karanasattari, the path of restraint, and the quantity (of food) yourself.
After that, Shraman Bhagwan Arishtanemi himself initiated Gautam Kumar and taught him the Dharma, including conduct and other principles, saying - Devanupriya! You should walk on the earth with only your eyes, you should stand on the lifeless ground, you should sit after cleaning the ground, you should sleep after reciting Samayik and cleaning your body, you should eat food that is free from faults due to pain and other causes, you should speak in a beneficial, moderate, and sweet manner. You should practice restraint by protecting the life (of the disabled), the plants (vegetation), the living beings (with five senses), and the beings (with one sense) with vigilance and caution. You should not be negligent in this matter at all.
After that, Gautam Kumar Muni, having heard this Dharma-related instruction from Shraman Bhagwan Arishtanemi and having held it in his heart, accepted it completely. He walked according to the Bhagwan's instructions, stood in the same way, sat in the same way, slept in the same way, ate in the same way, and spoke sweetly in the same way, abandoning negligence and sleep, taking care of life, plants, living beings, and beings, and practicing restraint. After becoming an Anagari, Gautam, keeping the Nirgrantha in front of him, began to wander, following the Bhagwan's instructions.
