[First Varga]
[The queen named Dharini was the wife of the 11th king. At some time, the queen Dharini was resting on an excellent bed, which should be understood as similar to the bed described in the Mahabal (chapter). Thereafter, (the description of) the dream-vision, birth of a son, his childhood play, knowledge of arts, youth, marriage, beautiful palace, and enjoyments etc. should also be understood as similar to (the description in) Mahabal.
Specifically, the name of that child was Gautama, he was made to perform the marriage ceremony with eight excellent princesses on the same day, and eight types of dowry items were given.
Elucidation - In the present sutra, the description from the entry of Gautama Kumar in the womb up to the enjoyment of sensual pleasures and marriage has been given. Now the sutra-maker, in the next sutra, describes the initiation of Gautama Kumar into the refuge of the most worshipful Lord Arishtanemi:
At that time and at that moment, the Arhat Arishtanemi, while dwelling [engaged in cultivating the self with asceticism and austerity], the four types of devas arrived. Kanha also came out. Hearing the Dharma, (he said) "O divine ones! I shall take permission from my parents. O divine ones, [after shaving my head and becoming a homeless ascetic, I shall renounce the household life]" - just as Megh (did), so also Gautama himself takes the five-fold vow of the world. Having done so, he approaches the ascetic Lord Arishtanemi. Approaching the ascetic Lord Arishtanemi, he thrice requests for ordination. Having done so, he pays obeisance, prostrates, and after paying obeisance and prostrating, speaks thus:
"O Lord! I am attached to the world, O Lord! I am stained by the world, O Lord! I am attached and stained by the world due to old age and death. Just as a householder, while dwelling in a house, takes a light burden, inexpensive and of little value, and goes to a secluded place, so also, in my case, there is a certain light burden, dear, pleasant, and agreeable, this, being my last, will be the helper, companion, and follower in the destruction of the cycle of rebirth. Therefore, I wish to be initiated, tonsured, trained, and instructed by the divine ones in the code of conduct, alms-round, discipline, scriptures, practices, and the teaching of the Dharma."
Then the ascetic Lord Arishtanemi himself initiates him, himself tonsures him, himself trains him, himself instructs him in the code of conduct, alms-round, discipline, scriptures, practices, and the teaching of the Dharma, (saying) "O divine ones! One should go, stand, sit, lie down, eat, speak, and rise up, controlling oneself with restraint towards living beings. And there should be no negligence."
Then, Gautama Kumar, having heard and understood this Dharmika instruction from the ascetic Lord Arishtanemi, readily accepts it. He goes accordingly, stands accordingly, sits accordingly, lies down accordingly, eats accordingly, speaks accordingly, and rises up accordingly, controlling himself with restraint towards living beings. Then, Gautama became a homeless ascetic and dwells, practicing this very Nirgantha doctrine.]
