Accomplished, endowed with discipline, endowed with knowledge, endowed with faith, endowed with conduct, endowed with modesty, endowed with lightness, victorious over anger, victorious over pride, victorious over deceit, victorious over greed, conqueror of passions, conqueror of sleep, conqueror of the senses, conqueror of adversities, free from the fear of life and death, engaged in austerities, abandonment of demerits, abandonment of karmic activities, abandonment of conduct, abandonment of restraint, abandonment of determination, abandonment of simplicity, abandonment of gentleness, abandonment of lightness, abandonment of patience, abandonment of protection, abandonment of liberation, abandonment of knowledge, abandonment of mantras, abandonment of brahmacharya, abandonment of Vedas, abandonment of logic, abandonment of rules, abandonment of truth, abandonment of hearing, abandonment of knowledge, abandonment of faith, abandonment of conduct, gross, fierce, of fierce qualities, of fierce austerities, of fierce brahmacharya, with an emaciated body, with a concentrated-expanded-limited-extent of psychic energy, endowed with the fourteen Purvas, endowed with the four types of knowledge, surrounded by five hundred ascetics, practicing in due order, going from village to village, dwelling happily with happiness, he comes to the city of Campā and then to the Puṇṇabhadda Shrine. Outside the city of Campā, he takes an appropriate seat in the Puṇṇabhadda Shrine, and after taking it, he dwells, cultivating himself with restraint and austerity.
At that time and occasion, the senior disciple of Venerable Sudhamma, Venerable Jambū by name, an ascetic of the Kāśyapa clan, of a well-proportioned figure, with a diamond-like, bull-like, and serpent-like physique, with a body of golden hue, engaged in intense austerities, blazing austerities, scorching austerities, great austerities, gross, fierce, of fierce qualities, of fierce austerities, of fierce brahmacharya, with an emaciated body, with a concentrated-expanded-limited-extent of psychic energy, dwells in close proximity to Venerable Sudhamma, above the knees, with the head lowered, absorbed in meditation, cultivating himself with restraint and austerity.
Then, that Venerable Jambū, filled with curiosity, doubt, and eagerness, rises up, rises, and comes to where Venerable Sudhamma is. Having come, he thrice circumambulates Venerable Sudhamma, pays obeisance, and stands before him with joined palms, listening respectfully and paying obeisance.
While residing there, he speaks thus: "If, Venerable Sir, the ascetic Lord Mahāvīra, the Tīrthaṅkara, the Self-Enlightened One, the Foremost of Men, the Lion among Men, the Excellent Lotus among Men, the Excellent Elephant among Men, the Highest in the World, the Lord of the World, the Refuge of the World, the Eye of the World, the Path of the World, the Life of the World, the Enlightenment of the World, the Dharma of the World, the Teacher of the Dharma, the Leader of the Dharma, the Excellent Charioteer of the Dharma, the Unobstructed Excellent Universal Monarch..."
