गाथापति आनन्द जम्बू की जिज्ञासा : सुधर्मा का उत्तर
१. तेणं कालेणं तेणं समएणं
चंपा नाम नयरी होत्था। वण्णओ।
पुण्णभद्दे चेइए। वण्णओ।
उस काल - वर्तमान अवसर्पिणी के चौथे आरे के अन्त में, उस समय-जब आर्य सुधर्मा विद्यमान थे, चम्पा नामक नगरी थी, पूर्णभद्र नामक चैत्य था। दोनों का वर्णन औपपातिकसूत्र से जान लेना चाहिए। विवेचन
यहाँ काल और समय-ये दो शब्द आये हैं । साधारणतया ये पर्यायवाची हैं। जैन पारिभाषिक दृष्टि से इनमें अन्तर भी है। काल वर्तना-लक्षण सामान्य समय का वाचक है और समय काल के सूक्ष्मत्तम-सबसे छोटे भाग का सूचक है। पर, यहाँ इन दोनों का इस भेद-मूलक अर्थ के साथ प्रयोग नहीं हुआ है। जैन आगमों की वर्णन-शैली की यह विशेषता है, वहाँ एक ही बात प्रायः अनेक पर्यायवाची, समानार्थक या मिलते-जुलते अर्थ वाले शब्दों द्वारा कही जाती है। भाव को स्पष्ट रूप में प्रकट करने में इससे सहायता मिलती है। पाठकों के सामने किसी घटना, वृत्त या स्थिति का एक बहुत साफ शब्द-चित्र उपस्थित हो जाता है। यहाँ काल का अभिप्राय वर्तमान अवसर्पिणी के चौथे आरे के अन्त से है तथा समय उस युग या काल का सूचक है, जब आर्य सुधर्मा विद्यमान थे।
यहाँ चम्पा नगरी तथा पर्णभद्र चैत्य का उल्लेख हआ है। दोनों के आगे 'वण्णओ' शब्द आया है। जैन आगमों में नगर, गाँव, उद्यान आदि सामान्य विषयों के वर्णन का एक स्वीकृत रूप है। उदाहरणार्थ, नगरी के वर्णन का जो सामान्य क्रम है, वह सभी नगरियों के लिए काम में आ जाता है। औरों के साथ भी ऐसा ही है।
लिखे जाने से पूर्व जैन आगम मौखिक परम्परा से याद रखे जाते थे। याद रखने में सुविधा की दृष्टि से संभवतः यह शैली अपनाई गई हो। वैसे नगर, उद्यान आदि साधारणतया लगभग सदृश होते ही हैं।
