प्रथम अध्ययन : सार संक्षेप] अनशन स्वीकार कर लिया। ऐहिक जीवन की सब प्रकार की इच्छाओं और आकर्षणों से वह सर्वथा ऊँचा उठ गया। जीवन और मरण दोनों की आकांक्षा से अतीत बन वह आत्म-चिन्तन में लीन हो गया।
धर्म के निगूढ चिन्तन और आराधन में संलग्न आनन्द के शुभ एवं उज्जवल परिणामों के कारण अवधिज्ञानावरणकर्म का क्षयोपशम हुआ, उसको अवधिज्ञान उत्पन्न हो गया।
भगवान् महावीर विहार करते हुए पधारे, वाणिज्यग्राम केबाहर दूतीपलाश चैत्य में ठहरे। लोग धर्मलाभ लेने लगे। भगवान् के प्रमुख शिष्य गौतम तब निरन्तर बेले-बेले का तप कर रहे थे। वे एक दिन भिक्षा के लिए वाणिज्यग्राम में गए। जब वे कोल्लाक सन्निवेश के पास पहुँचे, उन्होंने आनन्द के आमरण अनशन के सम्बन्ध में सना। उन्होंने सोचा. अच्छा हो मैं भी उधर हो आऊँ। वे पोषधशाला में आनन्द के पास आए। आनन्द का शरीर बहुत क्षीण हो चुका था। अपने स्थान से इधर-उधर होना उसके लिए शक्य नहीं था। उसने आर्य गौतम से अपने निकट पधारने की प्रार्थना की, जिससे वह यथाविधि उन्हें वन्दन कर सके। गौतम निकट आए। आनन्द ने सभक्ति वन्दना किया और एक प्रश्न भी किया- भन्ते! क्या गृहस्थ को अवधिज्ञान उत्पन्न हो सकता है? गौतम ने कहा-आनन्द! हो सकता है। तब आनन्द बोला-भगवन् ! मैं एक गृहि-श्रावक की भूमिका में हूं, मुझे भी अवधिज्ञान हुआ है। मै उसके द्वारा पूर्व की ओर लवणसमुद्र में पांच सौ योजन तक तथा अधोलोक में लोलुपाच्युत नरक तक जानता हूँ, देखता हूँ। इस पर गौतम बोले-आनन्द! गृहस्थ को अवधिज्ञान हो सकता है, पर इतना विशाल नहीं। तुम से जो यह असत्य भाषण हो गया है, उसकी आलोचना करो, प्रायश्चित करो।
__ आनन्द बोला-भगवन् ! क्या जिन-प्रवचन में और यथार्थ भावों के लिए भी आलोचना की जाती है? गौतम ने कहा-आनन्द! ऐसा नहीं होता। तब आनन्द बोला- भगवन् ! जिन-प्रवचन में यदि सत्य और यथार्थ भावों की आलोचना नहीं होती तो आप ही इस सम्बन्ध में आलोचना कीजिये। अर्थात् मैंने जो कहा है, वह असत्य नहीं है। गौतम विचार में पड़ गए। इस सम्बन्ध में भगवान् से पूछने का निश्चय किया। वे भगवान् के पास आए। उन्हें सारा वृत्तान्त सुनाया और पूछा कि आलोचना और प्रायश्चित्त का भागी कौन है?
भगवान् ने कहा-गौतम ! तुम ही आलोचना करो और आनन्द से क्षमा याचना भी। आनन्द ने ठीक कहा है।
गौतम पवित्र एवं सरलचेता साधक थे। उन्होंने भगवान् महावीर का कथन विनयपूर्वक स्वीकार किया और सरल भाव से अपने दोष की आलोचना की, आनन्द से क्षमा याचना की।
आनन्द अपने उज्जवल आत्म-परिणामों में उत्तरोत्तर दृढ और दृढतर होता गया। एक मास की संलेखना के उपरान्त उसने समाधि-मरण प्राप्त किया। देह त्याग कर वह सौधर्म देवलोक के सौधर्मावतंसक महाविमान के ईशानकोण में स्थित अरूण विमान में देवरूप में उत्पन्न हुआ।

A householder can gain [avadhijnana], but not so vast. You have spoken untruth, criticize yourself, do penance."

Ananda said, "Bhagavan! Is there criticism even for the Jina-preachings and for the true meanings?" Gautam said, "Ananda! That does not happen." Then Ananda said, "Bhagavan! If there is no criticism of truth and true meanings in the Jina-preachings, then you criticize in this regard. That is, what I have said is not untrue." Gautam was lost in thought. He decided to ask the Lord about this. He went to the Lord. He told him the whole story and asked who is the one who should criticize and do penance?

The Lord said, "Gautam! You criticize and also seek forgiveness from Ananda. Ananda has spoken correctly."

Gautam was a pure and simple-minded seeker. He accepted the Lord Mahavira's statement with humility and with a simple heart, he criticized his fault and sought forgiveness from Ananda.

Ananda became increasingly firm and firmer in his bright self-results. After one month of [sanlekhana], he attained [samadhi-maran]. After leaving his body, he was born in the form of a god in the Arun Vimana, located in the northeast corner of the Soudharmavatansaka Maha Vimana of the Soudharma Devaloka.
