[उपासकदशांगसूत्र एवं खलु, देवाणुप्पिया! समणे भगवं महावीरे महइ-महालयंसि संसारंसि बहवे जीवे नस्समाणे, विणस्समाणे, खजमाणे, छिजमाणे, भिजमाणे, लुप्पमाणे, विलुप्पमाणे, उम्मग्गपडिवन्ने, सप्पह-विप्पणठे मिच्छत्त-बलाभिभूए, अट्ठविह-कम्म-तम-पडलपडोच्छन्ने, बहूहिं अट्ठेहि य जाव' वागरणेहि य चाउरंताओ संसारकंताराओ साहत्थिं नित्थारेइ। से तेणट्ठणं, देवाणुप्पिया! एवं वुच्चइ समणे भगवं महावीरे महाधम्मकही।
आगए णं, देवाणुप्पिया! इहं महानिजामए? के णं, देवाणुप्पिया! महानिजामए? समणे भगवं महावीरे महानिजामए। से केणढेणं?
एवं खलु, देवाणुप्पिया! समणे भगवं महावीरे संसार-महा-समुद्दे बहवे जीवे नस्समाणे, विणस्समाणे जाव' विलुप्पमाणे बुड्डमाणे, निबुड्डमाणे, उप्पियमाणे धम्ममईए नावाए निव्वाण-तीराभिमुहे साहत्थि संपावेइ। तेणढेणं, देवाणुप्पिया! एवं वुच्चइ समणे भगवं महावीरे महानिजामए।

गोशालक-सकडालपत्र! श्रमण भगवान् महावीर अप्रतिहत ज्ञान-दर्शन के धारक हैं , तीनों लोकों द्वारा सेवित एवं पूजित हैं , सत्कर्मसम्पत्ति से युक्त हैं, इसलिए मैं उन्हें महामाहन कहता हूं।
गोशालक ने फिर कहा-क्या यहां महागोप आए थे? सकडालपुत्र-देवानुप्रिय! कौन महागोप? (महागोप से आपका क्या अभिप्राय?) गोशालक-श्रमण भगवान् महावीर महागोप हैं। सकडालपुत्र-देवानुप्रिय! उन्हें आप किस अर्थ में महागोप कह रहे हैं?
गोशालक-देवानुप्रिय! इस संसार रूपी भयानक वन में अनेक जीव नश्यमान हैं -सन्मार्ग से च्युत हो रहे हैं , विनश्यमान हैं -प्रतिक्षण मरण प्राप्त कर रहे हैं, खाद्यमान हैं -मृग आदि की योनि में शेरबाघ आदि द्वारा खाए जा रहे हैं, छिद्यमान हैं -मनुष्य यदि योनि में तलवार आदि से काटे जा रहे हैं, भिद्यमान हैं -भाले आदि द्वारा बींधे जा रहे हैं, लुप्यमान हैं -जिनके कान, नासिका आदि का छेदन किया जा रहा हैं , विलुप्यमान हैं -जो विकलांग किए जा रहे हैं, उनका धर्म रूपी दंड से रक्षण करते १. देखें सूत्र-संख्या १७५ २. देखें सूत्र यही
