[११३ देने का प्रतिबोध मिला, चुलनीपिता के साथ भी ऐसा ही घटित हुआ। भगवान् महावीर जब अपने जनपद-विहार के बीच वाराणसी पधारे तो चुलनीपिता ने भी भगवान् की धर्मदेशना सुनी, वह अन्तःप्रेरित
जीवन को व्रतों के सांचे में ढाला-श्रावक-धर्म स्वीकार किया। वह अपने जीवन को उत्तरोत्तर उपासना में लगाए रखने में प्रयत्नशील रहने लगा।
एक दिन की बात है, वह ब्रह्मचर्य एवं पोषध-व्रत स्वीकार किए, पोषधशाला में उपासनारत था, आधी रात का समय था। उपसर्ग करने के लिए एक देव प्रकट हुआ। हाथ में तेज तलवार लिए उसने चुलनीपिता को कहा-तुम व्रतों को छोड़ दो, नहीं तो मैं तुम्हारे ज्येष्ठ पुत्र को घर से उठा लाऊंगा। तुम्हारे ही सामने उसको काटकर तीन टुकड़े कर डालूंगा, उबलते पानी से भरी कढ़ाही में उन्हें खौलाऊंगा और तुम्हारे बेटे का उबलता हुआ मांस और रक्त तुम्हारे शरीर पर छिड़कूगा।
चुलनीपिता के समक्ष एक भीषण दृश्य था। पुत्र की हत्या की विभीषिका थी। सांसारिक प्रियजनों में पुत्र का अपना असाधारण स्थान है। पुत्र के प्रति पिता के मन में कितनी ममता होती है, यह किसी से छिपा नहीं है। भारतीय साहित्य में तो यहाँ तक उल्लेख है-'सर्वेभ्यो जयमन्विच्छेत् पुत्रात् शिष्यात् पराजयम्' अर्थात् पिता यह कामना करता है, मेरा पुत्र इतनी उन्नति करे, इतना आगे बढ़ जाय कि मुझे वह पराजय दे सकें। उसी प्रकार गुरू भी यह कामना करता है कि मेरा शिष्य इतना योग्य हो जाय कि मुझे वह पराभूत कर सके।
इस परिपार्श्व में जब हम सोचते हैं तो चुलनीपिता के सामने एक हृदय-द्रावक विभीषिका थी, पर उसने हृदय या भावुकता को विवेक पर हावी नहीं होने दिया, अपनी उपासना में अविचल भाव से लगा रहा। देव का क्रोध उबल पड़ा। उसने जैसा कहा था, देवमाया से क्षण भर में वैसा ही दृश्य उपस्थित कर दिया। उसी के बेटे का उबलता मांस और रक्त उसकी देह पर छिड़का। बहुत भयानक और साथ ही साथ बीभत्स कर्म यह था। पत्थर का हृदय भी फट जाय, पर चुलनीपिता अडिग रहा।
देव और विकराल हो गया। उसने फिर धमकी दी-मैंने जैसा तुम्हारे बड़े बेटे के साथ किया है, वैसा तुम्हारे मंझेले बेटे के साथ भी करता हूं, मान जाओं, आराधना से हट जाओ! पर, चुलनीपिता फिर भी घबराया नहीं। तब देव ने बड़े बेटे की तरह मंझले बेटे के साथ भी वैसा ही किया।
देव ने तीसरी बार फिर चुलनीपिता को धमकी दी--तुम्हारे दो बेटे समाप्त किए जा चुके हैं, अब छोटे की बारी है। उसकी भी यही हालत होने वाली है। अब भी मान जाओ। पर, चुलनी-पिता अविचल रहा। देव ने छोटे बेटे का भी काम तमाम कर दिया और वैसा ही क्रूर और नृशंस व्यवहार किया। चुलनीपिता उपासना में इतना रम गया था कि हृदय की दुर्बलताएं वह काफी हद तक जीत चुका था। इसलिए, देव का यह नृशंस कर्म उसे अपने पथ से डिगा नहीं सका।

One day, he had accepted Brahmacharya and Poshad-Vrat and was engaged in worship in the Poshadshala. It was the middle of the night. A Dev appeared to cause an upsurge. Holding a sharp sword in his hand, he said to Chulani Pita, "Give up your vows, otherwise I will bring your eldest son from home. I will cut him into three pieces in front of you, boil them in a pot filled with boiling water, and sprinkle his boiling flesh and blood on your body."
