[उपासकदशांगसूत्र धार्मिक है । मैं तुम्हारे सामने इस तेज तलवार से काटकर उसके तीन टुकड़े कर डालूंगा। जैसे तुम्हारे पुत्रों को उबलते पानी की कढ़ाही में खौलाया, उसे भी खौलाऊंगा तथा उसी तरह उसके उबलते हुए मांस और रक्त से तुम्हारा शरीर छीटूंगा।
अपने तीनों बेटों की नृशंस हत्या के समय जिसका हृदय जरा भी विचलित नहीं हुआ, अत्यन्त दृढता और तन्मयता के साथ धर्म-ध्यान में लगा रहा, जब उसके समक्ष उसकी श्रद्धेया और ममतामयी माता की हत्या का प्रश्न आया, उसके धीरज का बांध टूट गया। उसे मन ही मन लगा, यह दुष्ट मेरी आंखों के देखते ऐसा नीच कार्य करेगा। ऐसा कभी नहीं हो सकता। मैं अभी इस दुष्ट को पकड़ता हूं। यों क्रुद्ध होकर चुलनीपिता उसे पकड़ने को उठा, हाथ फैलाए। वह तो देव का षड्यंत्र था। वह देव आकाश में अन्तर्धान हो गया और चुलनीपिता के हाथों में पोषधशाला का खंभा आ गया, जो उसके सामने था। चुलनीपिता हक्का-बक्का रह गया। वह जोर जोर से चिल्लाने लगा।
भद्रा सार्थवाही ने जब यह शोर सुना तो वह झट वहाँ आई और अपने पुत्र से बोली--क्या हुआ, ऐसा क्यों करते हो? चुलनीपिता ने वह सारी घटना बतलाई, जो घटित हुई थी। उसकी माता ने कहा--बेटा! यह देव द्वारा किया गया उपसर्ग था, यह सारी देवमाया थी। सब सुरक्षित हैं, किसी की हत्या नहीं हुई। क्रोध करके तुमने अपना व्रत तोड़ दिया। तुमसे यह भूल हो गई, तुम्हें इसके लिए प्रायश्चित करना होगा, जिससे तुम शुद्ध हो सको। चुलनीपिता ने मां का कथन शिरोधार्य किया। प्रायश्चित स्वीकार किया।
मानव-मन बड़ा दुर्बल है। उपासक को क्षण-क्षण सावधान रहना अपेक्षित है। थोड़ी सी सावधानी टूटते ही हृदय में दुर्बलता उभर आती है। उपासक अपने मार्ग से चलित हो जाता है। किसी से भूल होना असंभव नही है, पर जब भूल मालूम हो जाय तो व्यक्ति को तत्क्षण जागरूक हो जाना चाहिए, उस भूल के लिए आन्तरिक खेद अनुभव करना चाहिए। पुनः वैसा न हो, इसके लिए संकल्पबद्ध होना चाहिए। उक्त घटना इन्हीं सब बातों पर प्रकाश डालती है। अस्तु।
चुलनीपिता धर्म की उपासना में उत्तरोत्तर अग्रसर होता गया। उसने व्रताराधना से आत्मा को भावित करते हुए बीस वर्ष तक श्रावक-धर्म का पालन किया, ग्यारह उपासक प्रतिमाओं की सम्यक् आराधना की, एक मास की अन्तिम संलेखना और एक मास का अनशन सम्पन्न कर, समाधिपूर्वक देह-त्याग किया। सौधर्म देवलोक में अरूणप्रभा विमान में वह देव रूप में उत्पन्न हुआ।
