. तदन्तर श्रमणोपासक आनन्द को अनेकविध शीलव्रत, गुणव्रत, विरमण--विरति, प्रत्याख्यानत्याग, पोषधोपवास आदि द्वारा आत्म-भावित होते हुए--आत्मा का परिष्कार और परिमार्जन करते हुए चौदह वर्ष व्यतीत हो गए। जब पन्द्रहवां वर्ष आधा व्यतीत हो चुका था, एक दिन आधी रात के बाद धर्म-जागरण करते हुए आनन्द के मन में ऐसा अन्तर्भाव--चिन्तन, आन्तरिक मांग, मनोभाव या संकल्प उत्पन्न हुआ-वाणिज्यग्राम नगर में बहुत से मांडलिक नरपति, ऐश्वर्यशाली एवं प्रभावशील पुरूष आदि के अनेक कार्यों में मैं पूछने योग्य एवं सलाह लेने योग्य हूं, अपने सारे कुटुम्ब का मैं [मेढि , प्रमाण तथा] आधार हूं। इस व्याक्षेप-कार्यबहुलता या रूकावट के कारण मैं श्रमण भगवान् महावीर के पास अंगीकृत धर्म-प्रज्ञप्ति-धर्म-शिक्षा के अनुरूप आचार का सम्यक् परिपालन नहीं कर पा रहा हूं। इसलिए मेरे लिए यही श्रेयस्कर है, मैं कल [रात बीत जाने पर, प्रभात हो जाने पर, नीले तथा अन्य कमलों के सुहावने रूप में खिल जाने पर, उज्जवल प्रभा एवं लाल अशोक, किंशकु, तोते की चोंच, धुंघची के आधे भाग के रंग से सदृश लालिमा लिए हुए, कमल-वन को उद्बोधित--विकसित करने वाले, सहस्त्र-किरणयुक्त, दिन के प्रादुर्भावक सूर्य के उदित होने पर, अपने तेज से उद्दीप्त होने पर] मैं पूरण की तरह [बड़े परिमाण में अशन, पान, खाद्य, स्वाद्य-आहार तैयार करवा कर मित्र-वृन्द, स्वजातीय लोग, अपने पारिवारिक जन, बन्धु-बान्धव, सम्बन्धि-जन, दास-दासियों को आमन्त्रित कर उन्हें अच्छी तरह भोजन कराऊंगा, वस्त्र सुगन्धित पदार्थ-इत्र आदि, माला तथा आभूषणों से उनका सत्कार करूंगा, सम्मान करूंगा एवं उनके सामने] अपने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र को अपने स्थान पर नियुक्त करूंगा-कुटुम्ब का भार सौपूंगा, अपने मित्र-गण [जातीय जन, पारिवारिक सदस्य, बन्धु-बान्धव, सम्बन्धी, १. देखें सूत्र-यही २. देखिसे - भगवती सूत्र
