Sometimes we wonder whether in the name of progress man is not walking in the direction of biological extinction.
In this critical time we have to understand the truth that now peace is universally desired. But how can it be achieved unless we work for the elimination of impediments to its realisation. The subject of peace is not a matter of personal attribute alone. It is a question of establishing a new society founded on values, culture and a way of life integral to peace-local, regional or global. The question of peace and international cooperation has to be considered from various angles. We should focus on avoidance of war and develop strategies, process and instrumentalities that minimize tension, augment the balance of power, attempt to reduce arms and armed forces and promote negotiated settlement of international problems. In fact, peace is not only absence of distrubance. Rather,
is the highest and most strenuous action, in which all our powers and affections are blended in a beautiful proportion. It is more than silence after storms. It is the concord of all melodious sounds. It is conscious harmony with the creation, an alliance of love with all beings, a sympathy with all that is pure and happy, a surrender of every separate will and interest, a participation of the spirit and life of the universe, an entire concord of purpose with its infinite original. It is a sublime sentiment of mind which allows the individual to operate optimally and freely. Firstly, there should be absence of constraints, which affect man's freedom. These constraints could include religious, political, economic, social, technological and cultural factors. Secondly, there must be opportunity for the individual to grow in body and mind, in emotions and spirit, in isolation and in communion with others.
The concept and practice of peace must resolve and permeate five layers of social units. First is the individual, then the family, followed by the community, the nation and finally the inernational coinmunity. They all intertwine and relate with each other and this interconnectedness is best understood when examined singularly and then in their combination. Peace on an individual level is a condition of the human consciousness, without any conflict or confusion, and with a positive potential for useful, helpful and progressive activity, leading to higher and happier dimensions of
