On the social and international level, peace is a conditon of the collective psyche which is free from war and, threat of war and is frought with promise of activities which would lead to more useful, harmonious, and happy co-operative living yielding greater joy and sense of fulfilment on account of successful creative living and action. Under this scenario, peace is multidimensional phenomenon and it means more than the absence of structural violence of war.
Peace is not the problem of world only. It is a problem of every nation, of every society, of every individual. Unless we think about peace at individual, social, national, and global level, we can not take, a holistic approach. A partial approach cannot solve the problem of world peace. So we should, therefore, first think of mental peace before taking care of world peace. If there is no atmosphere for peace in the society how shall it contribute towards world peace? We have to take care of individual peace also while thinking of harmony in the society. If those who control the social order do not have peace of mind they cannot do much for social harmony.
Man is egoistic. He has vested interest and wants to rule over others. These are the root causes of disturbance of peace. We have not paid proper attention towards their removal. We are concentrating only on weapons, army and war. We are giving too much importance to what is subsidiary, neglecting the main problem. Peace and non-violence are two sides of the same coin. We can not think of one without the other. Struggle is psychologically a basic instinct. There are reasons, internal and external both, for peace as well as for absence of peace. Economic disparity disturbs the mind which instigates violence. Some become millionaires, other do not get even sufficient food. Hunger disturbs the mind and creates violent tendencies. And these types of situations create more and more disturbance in every walk of life. The solution of these problems is not only external but internal also. Through the ancient wisdom one can get the solution. The spiritual dignitaries like, Lord Buddha and Lord Mahavira have given some precious and particular solutions of these turmoils. Peace and non-violence are the cardinal virtues of Buddhism. Lord Buddha said 'There is no other २३०. व्रात्य दर्शन
