शब्दान्तर से कहें तो पहली प्रवृत्ति रचनात्मकता की मूल है और दूसरी प्रवृत्ति के साथ विध्वंस की बात जुड़ी है।

इरोज और थैनटॉस दोनों मूल प्रवृत्तियों के सन्दर्भ में महत्त्वपूर्ण बात है कि फ्रायड ने इनकी स्वतंत्र सत्ता स्वीकार नहीं की। उन्होंने माना कि उनमें सतत उभयभाव बना रहता है।
जैन मान्यता के अनुसार राग की अभिव्यक्ति के समय में व्यक्ति द्वेष चेतना से मुक्त नहीं हो जाता और द्वेष के क्षणों में राग का संस्कार समाप्त नहीं होता, भले अपने चर्म चक्षुओं से हम इस सच्चाई को पकड़ सकें अथवा न पकड़ सकें।
लेश्या भी जब तक कषाय चेतना से जुड़ी रहती है तब तक रागद्वेषात्मक संस्कारों का संचालन करती रहती है। व्यक्ति कभी प्रियता में जीता है और कभी अप्रियता में जीता
