आवाज आ रही है। भयोत्पादक एवं विद्रूप पिशाचों, बेतालों द्वारा ठहाका मारकर अट्टहास करने से जो अतिशय भयावना एवं अरमणीय हो रहा है और जो अतीव तीव्र दुर्गन्ध से घिनौना होने के कारण देखने में भीषण जान पड़ता है।
(वे तस्कर) ऐसे शून्य स्थानों के अतिरिक्त वनों में, सूने घरों में, लयनों-शिलाओं से बने घरों में, मार्ग पर बनी हुई दुकानों, पर्वतों की गुफाओं, ऊबड़-खाबड़ स्थानों और सिंह, व्याघ्र आदि हिंसक प्राणियों से व्याप्त स्थानों में (राजदण्ड से बचने के लिए) इधर-उधर मारे-मारे फिरते हैं। उनके शरीर की चमड़ी सर्दी और गर्मी से सूखकर सिकुड़ गई है। सर्दी-गर्मी की तीव्रता के कारण चमड़ी जल जाती है या चेहरे की कान्ति मंद पड़ जाती है। __वे नरक भव में और तिर्यंच भव रूपी गहन वन में होने वाले निरन्तर असह्य दुःखों की अधिकता द्वारा भोगने योग्य पापकर्मों का संचय करते हैं, अर्थात् अदत्तादान के पाप से नरक की एवं तिर्यंचगति की तीव्र वेदनाओं को निरन्तर भोगे बिना छुटकारा नहीं मिलता। ऐसे घोर पापकर्मों का वे संचय करते हैं।
(जंगल में कभी यहाँ और कभी वहाँ लुक-छिपकर भटकते-छिपते रहने के कारण) उन्हें खाने योग्य अन्न-चावल, गेहूँ आदि और पीने के लिए जल भी दुर्लभ होता है। कभी प्यास से पीड़ित रहते हैं, कभी भूखे रहते हैं, थके रहते हैं और कभी-कभी माँस, मुर्दा शरीर, कभी कन्दमूल आदि जो कुछ भी मिल जाता है, उसी को खाकर रहना पड़ता है। वे निरन्तर उद्विग्न-घबराये हुए रहते हैं, सदैव एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर भागते रहते हैं। उनका कोई शरणदाता नहीं होता। इस प्रकार वे जंगल में रहते हैं, जहाँ सैकड़ों सो (अजगरों, भेड़ियों, सिंहों, व्याघ्रों) आदि का भय बना रहता है अर्थात् विषैले और हिंसक जन्तुओं के कारण जो सदा शंकाजनक बना रहता है। 69.
