२०. [ प्रतिप्रश्न ] इस पर उन अन्यतीर्थिकों ने उन स्थविर भगवन्तों से इस प्रकार पूछा - "आर्यो ! हम किस कारण त्रिविध-त्रिविध असंयत, अविरत यावत् एकान्तबाल हैं ?"
20. The heretics asked the senior ascetics-Why do you say that we are devoid of restraint (asamyat) ... and so on up to ... through three means (karan) and three methods (yoga) ... and so on up to... ignorant (ekaant baal ) ?

२१. तए णं ते थेरा भगवंतो ते अन्नउत्थिए एवं वयासी - तुब्भे णं अज्जो ! रीयं रीयमाणा पुढविं पेच्चेह जाव उबद्दवेह, तए णं तुब्भे पुढविं पेच्चेमाणा जाव उवद्दवेमाणा तिविहं तिविहेणं जाव एगंतबाला 5 यावि भवह।
21. The senior ascetics replied to the heretics – While walking you bear down on earth-bodied beings (prithvikaaya jivas) and so on up to 5 kill them. Therefore bearing down on earth-bodied beings (prithvikaaya jivas) and so on up to ... killing them, you are devoid of restraint (asamyat) ... and so on up to through three means (karan) and three methods (yoga) and so on up to ... complete ignorant 5 (ekaant baal).

२१. [ प्रत्युत्तर ] तब स्थविर भगवन्तों ने उन अन्यतीर्थिकों से यों कहा - "आर्यो ! तुम गमन करते हुए पृथ्वीकायिक जीवों को दबाते हो, यावत् मार देते हो। इसलिए पृथ्वीकायिक जीवों को दबाते हुए, यावत् मारते हुए तुम त्रिविध - त्रिविध असंयत, अविरत यावत् एकान्तबाल हो।"

२२. [ प्रत्याक्षेप ] इस पर वे अन्यतीर्थिक उन स्थविर भगवन्तों से यों बोले- हे आर्यो ! तुम्हारे मत 5 में गच्छन् ( जाता हुआ), अगत (नहीं गया) कहलाता है; जो लाँघा जा रहा है, वह नहीं लाँघा गया, कहलाता है और राजगृह को प्राप्त करने (पहुँचने) की इच्छा वाला पुरुष असम्प्राप्त (नहीं पहुँचा हुआ) कहलाता है।
२२. तए णं ते अन्नउत्थिया ते थेरे भगवंते एवं वयासी - तुब्भे णं अज्जो ! गम्ममाणे अगते, वीतिक्कमिज्जमाणे अवीतिक्कंते रायगिहं नगरं संपाविउकामे असंपत्ते ?

卐 22. At last the heretics said to the senior ascetics - Noble ones! फ According to you what 'is in the process of going' is termed as 'has not gone', what is 'beings crossed' is termed as 'has not crossed' and ' one who is desirous of reaching Rajagriha' is termed as 'has not reached Rajagriha'.
